John Curtice explains that First Past the Post no longer keeps parties like Reform in check #R4Today Retaining a system that hands out parliamentary majorities on 1/3rd of the vote is not only unfair, it's becoming dangerous 🎂 Also, a very Happy Birthday to @Sirjohncurtice! 🎉

@Sirjohncurtice Becoming dangerous? It always was! It saddled us with Tories despite them being despised by the overwhelming majority.

@Sirjohncurtice Agreed! The PREVAIL voting system gave Reform 95 seats at the last GE. This might seem large but it was their quota based on the popular vote. Labour's seats were reduced from 411 to 267. PREVAIL can keep all parties in check!

@Sirjohncurtice Agreed. Under PR we’d now (probably) have a Labour/LibDem/Green coalition under Starmer with a majority similar to Johnson’s in 2019. It would have been at least as good as (some would say “no worse than”) the Labour government.

@Sirjohncurtice We all like John Curtice, but I don’t understand his assertion that “First Past Thee Post no longer keeps Reform in check” Why should it? I am confused. If the voters want to vote for Reform(Not Me!). is he saying this is a problem? Common John, you are a Democrat after all
