The idea that you can or should seek “atonement” from a mob, over an undetermined and protracted period of time, with no reasonable criteria, at the cost of your livelihood and art, is just wrong. In the statement he seems to submit to this idea. I think any institution claiming to curate or present art should stand firmly on the idea that art stands on its own. Like when someone tells the truth, the truth cannot be invalidated by a particular fault of the person speaking it. And if the goal of a mob is to do just that, to silence the truth, they should be ignored. In the same way, with art, the appreciation of it cannot be impacted in its form and experience by the personal faults of the artist. Just doesn’t make sense, it’s intellectually barbaric and archaic. None of the people imposing this standard or upholding it can live up to it

I think he needs to stop apologizing and continue to be great. He has a lot of supporters. He doesn't need the met gala.
