If McCain had beaten Obama in 2008 (because he would have been re-elected in 2012) ... or Romney beaten Obama in 2012 (Romney lost because he said Russia was greatest US enemy) ... Putin never would have been allowed to keep Ukraine in 2014.

John McCain, IMHO the last real Republican. If he had been U.S. president in 2014, it is very likely that the occupation of Crimea would not have happened, and eight years later Russia would not have dared to fully invade Ukraine. Nothing provokes an aggressor more than weakness.
