The point of the ring is not to BE FEARLESS... but is to OVERCOME GREAT FEAR... You can still be afraid, it's natural, fear keeps you alive, it's biological... but it's greater when you OVERCOME it to do good and be heroic for the sake of others. Because that's hat a GL should be a hero who puts others above himself. Like looking death in the face and not flinching.

So the people who wrote the show don't even know the fundamentals off green lanterns. It's not a lack of fear but the ability to overcome it. It's really not that hard and they did do a disservice to John and hals character

On was a father with three children one of them a newborn and a wife the other was a batchelor already leading a reckless carefree life. One had more to lose then the other. The test in itself was fair the situations of the two men was very different.
