"Johnny's Mambo" from Dirty Dancing (1987) instantly establishes Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) and Penny Johnson (Cynthia Rhodes) as the resort's star dance couple. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion fashion breakdown from Crystal Kung Minkoff and Cynthia Bailey! Crystal and Cynthia note that #RHOA typically follows a clear theme, while #RHOBH is more vague, with general guidance like ‘jewel tones’ rather than a set theme. They both agreed Jennifer Tilly looked incredible, calling her dress iconic and completely her own, even if it did not quite fit the theme. When it came to Kathy Hilton, Crystal described the look as simple and age appropriate, while Cynthia seemed less impressed, saying, “she stayed with the theme in terms of colour… I think this is a look that is very true to what we can expect from Kathy.” Even though Erika Jayne was not on theme, both loved her look, with Cynthia naming her best dressed. Cynthia also loved Kyle Richards’ dress but felt it did not align with the rest of the cast or the theme, while Crystal said it leaned more toward a confessional style. For Dorit Kemsley, Cynthia appreciated the softness and simplicity but expected more of a fashion moment. They both liked Bozoma Saint John’s dress, especially the colour, with Crystal admitting she does not usually understand Boz’s style but loved this particular look. Rachel Zoe wore something Crystal and Cynthia said they would personally wear, but added that Rachel’s style feels repetitive episode to episode, a critique also shared by Tamra Judge and Teddi Mellencamp. They liked Sutton Stracke’s hair and the softness of her dress but were not fans of the colour. They did say Sutton had a glow up this season. As for Amanda Frances, Crystal joked that whoever made the dress must hate her, while Cynthia said the tulle needed to go. Crystal did love Amanda’s glam, but Cynthia disagreed. Crystal named Boz as most improved, while Cynthia gave best dressed to Erika and Boz. Podcast: Humble Brag

Patrick Swayze fell several times from the log and hurt his already injured knee during the filming of this scene in "Dirty Dancing" (1987). He was rushed straight to the hospital to get the fluid drained from his knee after the scene was completed. He considered this scene to be more difficult, physically taxing and painful than anything else he did in the movie. He wrote, "With all the dancing and jumping and running around, it’s no surprise that my knee began swelling again. I’d ice it after shooting the dance scenes, but as filming went on, I had to start getting it drained again—just as I’d done so often when dancing in New York. But it wasn’t dancing that caused me the most knee pain of all. It was the scene where I’m balancing on the log with Jennifer. We had to balance very carefully so we wouldn’t tumble onto the rocks below. It looks like fun in the movie, but shooting that scene was dangerous and physically taxing. When you’re balancing like that, your joints are working overtime, making constant tiny adjustments. And because most of the cartilage in my knee was gone, the bones were just grinding painfully on each other. After spending a couple of hours filming that log scene, I had to go straight to the hospital to get my knee drained. It was definitely more painful and difficult than anything I did on the dance floor." ("The Time of My Life", Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi, 2009 & IMDb) P.S: Remembering the great American actor Patrick Swayze on his 74th birthday!

Such was the lack of faith in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” that the MGM Studio considered this work a “B” picture. A cheap and low budget commercial film that was easily so dispensable. The studio even reassigning the film’s original budget to “Brigadoon” starring the draw of Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse estimating that it was surely set to be the more successful film. All of the women’s dresses designed by Walter Plunkett were made from old quilts from the Salvation Army which is unclear whether this was done due to a curtailed budget, or artistic effect. Legendary choreographer Michael Kidd was not too excited at the prospect of the film’s premise: “I can’t see any dancing in this picture. You got these seven slobs living out in the country. They got horse manure on the floor. They’re unwashed. They’re unshaven. They look terrible. These people are going to get up and dance? We’ll be hooted out of the theater. It doesn’t make any sense to me. Had to find a way to have these backwoods men dance without looking ridiculous. I had to base it all around activities you would accept from such people. It couldn’t look like ballet. And it could only have been done by superbly trained dancers.” Many have attested this is a ballet sequence. It is not according to Kidd whose choreography came from a perception of “human behaviours” further stylised in a rhythmical form. A use of “real-life gestures.” Russ Tamblyn in this dance for instance - is not a trained dancer, but he was an exceptional gymnast/ acrobat. This “Barn Dance” sequence standing as one of the most technically executed dance performances ever put to screen. Full of muscular energy and vigor that showcase technical feats at the highest level. It was the one of the most successful films in 1954, and is preserved by the Library of Congress - as culturally significant. Same film made on a shoestring budget. Outselling Brigadoon - starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse.

Céline Sciamma on why she made "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" (2019) & on Leonardo Di Caprio being a Lesbian icon: "Sciamma: What I had in mind above all was to make a film about love, with a totally invented story. And when I thought about it, I found that there were few films totally devoted to love, even though they are often the greatest in the history of cinema. It's rare, even though it's the beating heart of our cinephiles. Interviewer: What movies were you thinking of? Sciamma: 'Titanic' (1997), for example. It's a real influence, which I recently revisited. Both films are about the memories of a love affair, almost behind closed doors. I spent a long time looking for a framework and then one day I looked at the script and I thought: "F**k, it's Titanic! It's simply Titanic." There's the prologue, of course, before the flashback, but also the drawing scene, which is very explicit in my film. With this dialogue: "Don't laugh, be serious…" Interviewer Is it an important film for you? Sciamma: Collectively, it's important. There are different film regimes that count in our cinephilia: those we love and those that are part of a collective phenomenon. It's rare to experience those moments, especially when it's about 'Titanic' and not 'Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au bon Dieu?' (2014). Titanic was a cultural moment, and in my life as a cinephile, it's probably the most important one, even more so because of the shared love. And with a real queer dynamic! Leo DiCaprio is a lesbian icon. A very new masculinity at the time, in cinema - with time it deepens enormously, it's exciting to watch. At the time, in that youth and in that body, there was really something hyper queer. And then the love scene is a total inversion of the conventions: she's on top of him, she reassures him, he’s the one who’s breathless... All that in the back seat of a car, like in any good teen movie. There were great subversive effects in 'Titanic', and that's something James Cameron always did anyway. What it also has in common with my film is the idea that the greatest loves are emancipatory and that the loss of them is the price of our future fulfillment. At the end of 'Titanic', there are three photos of a girl in pants riding a horse! It’s one of the few films that asserts that love can bring positive things, even when it's over. In my opinion, this is one of the hidden reasons for the incredible success of the film." ("CÉLINE SCIAMMA : DiCaprio est une icône lesbienne.", Axel Cadieux, Sofilm, 2020) P.S: On this day, 7 years ago, "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" (2019) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, France.

Initially, Whoopi Goldberg was not considered for the part of Oda Mae Brown in "Ghost" (1990). When she was eating lunch with one of her friends who auditioned for the role, she was informed that “Every black woman and their mother was there”. When she finished lunch, Goldberg called her agent and asked, ‘Do you know about this movie that everybody’s talking about?’ He said, ‘Oh, who told you?’ And she told him the name of the person and asked her agent, ‘Why did you say it like that?’ her agent replied, ‘Because they don’t want you [for the movie],’” One day, Goldberg got a phone call from her agent, who said, ‘Patrick Swayze has been hired for this movie. Patrick is not going to do this if you don’t do it. Can you make some time for him and the director to come up?’” Goldberg said that Jerry Zucker and Swayze flew to meet her, and she was immediately at ease. “So they flew in, I meet Patrick, and out of the blue, we’re old friends" Shortly after, Swayze made his pitch for 'Ghost'. "About 40 minutes go by and Patrick says, 'Please do this with me and I was like, 'Yeah, okay.' And that’s how it happened. I said yes, not really knowing what it was going to be. It wasn’t until we all saw the film that we realized what we had.” For her performance in the movie, Whoopi Goldberg became the first actress to win Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards and Golden Globe Awards.
