/ Key takes from this week on The Game Souk: The rise of direct-to-consumer offerings, GTA VI preorders go live and another console, Steam Machine, is out ($$$$), Fortnite's strong mobile comeback, memory shortages continue, and Meta's moves into fintech and prediction markets. Join us LIVE Thursdays 9 am ET on X @daltonan

/ After @EpicGames won its court fights with Apple and Google, studios can route players to web shops and skip the 30% store cut, increasing direct-to-consumer offerings. DTC reached roughly $17B of mobile gaming revenue in 2025, about 15% of all mobile spend.

/ GTA VI preorders opened at $79.99 (Standard) and $99.99 (Ultimate), ahead of a November 19 release. Rockstar confirmed a single-player experience at launch, with a PC version to follow. It pushes the $69.99 benchmark that had been the norm for years.

/ Hardware prices are rising as memory shortages continue. Valve's Steam Machine launched at $1,049 without a controller and $1,128 bundled; Microsoft is increasing the price of Xbox, and Apple’s Mac and iPad prices increase by $200, all citing rising memory prices as the catalyst.

/ Fortnite’s strong comeback to Mobile. Its second week back was the largest download week in the game's history, with nearly 5M downloads, topping the 2018 high. It also reached +1M downloads for two days straight on May 30 and May 31.

/ Fortnite drew about 11.5M App Store downloads in its first month back, roughly 11.2M of them on iOS. Saudi Arabia led at about 25% (~2.9M), followed by Mexico at about 20% (~2.3M), with the UK third. Its first month on Android added about 5M.

/ Micron posted record fiscal Q3 revenue of $41.5B, up ~346% from a year ago, and shares rose ~15% after hours. SK Hynix, up over 300% this year, filed for a ~$29B Nasdaq listing that would rank among the five largest share sales ever.

/ Market concentration increases with fewer than 15% of S&P 500 stocks now explaining over 80% of the index's performance, versus about 20% at the 1999 peak. Stocks up more than 100% year to date account for over 100% of the market's roughly 7.5% gain this year.

/ Meta invested $900M in Indian fintech Cred for a ~20% stake at a $4.5B valuation, and named founder Kunal Shah to lead WhatsApp. It is also building Arena, a standalone prediction-markets app that launches with video game points rather than real money. We are not convinced this is what people want.
