Bill Cowher says assistant coaches are more important than the head coach, and explains why he coached his coaches instead of his players: “There’s a lot more going on behind the scenes. Let’s be respectful of the fact that we don’t know everything. That’s the receiver’s fault.’ How do you know?” “You weren’t in that meeting room. The game is chess. It’s not checkers.” “We look at the head coaches, but let’s look at the assistant coaches. To me, those are more important. I didn’t coach the players as a head coach. I coached the coaches.” “I wanted them to have that relationship with the player, not just me. If intervention was needed, I would intervene. But let them do their thing.” “Let the coaches call their games. Let the coaches coach the individual players. You can see it from afar and coach the coaches. That’s how you give them a chance to become a head coach.”

I get more pushback from youth coaches than I do from Power 5/Pro Coaches. I find that fascinating. We should debate ideas. Some of my ideas aren’t great. But I do get way more immediate pushback from lower level coaches than I get from higher level coaches. What I have found is that it is way more likely for a lower level coach to be stuck in their ways and call something stupid, while more successful coaches are open to discussing ideas. Give me your thoughts.

OVERCOACHING 👎 When in played in Europe I was speaking with the GM of my team and discussion some of the former coaches they had at the club. We got to an American Coach they had and he said ‘typical American coach, he overcoached the whole game’. I’m not saying I agree with this, but it made me think about the role of a coach and how too much talking/coaching can hinder performance and development. I am still not great at it, but try to be mindful of how and what I say. One of the best attributes a coach can have is learning when to ‘stay out of the way’ of their players.

I don't think it's just [Steve Sarkisian]. I think teams and the Cowboys could want to talk to Ryan Day. I think they could want to talk to Marcus Freeman. The way the NFL is going is trending a little bit toward the younger coach."

José Mourinho answers on what is important for a coach nowadays, compared to 20 years ago. "I'd say that today the most important thing is to speak very well. Because nowadays it's all about perceptions. In the past, the best coaches were the ones that won. Now, the best coaches are the ones with the better looking perceptions. You used to get important jobs by winning, today you get important jobs just with perceptions. When I went to the Premier League in 2004, only 2 foreign coaches arrived to the league: me as a European Champion, and Benitez as the Europa League winner. Benitez won with Valencia and went to Liverpool, I won with Porto and went to Chelsea. Nowadays some coaches go to the Premier League and I don't even know their names. And I don't say it in a disrespectful way, it's just the reality. There are coaches who are chosen based on data, numbers, and it's not on the number of wins. Nowadays there is this idea that winning is not as important as playing like this, or looking like that. In that aspect, things changed in a radical way."

Bielsa admits he has never tried to be the “friendly” coach. He values order, discipline, seriousness, obsession. That has made him one of the most respected minds in football. But even Bielsa seems to accept something powerful here: That approach does not work for every player. It does not work in every environment. And knowledge alone is never enough. As a coach, you have to find a way to connect. Quote us on this: “You can have all the knowledge in the world, but it is absolutely useless if the people playing don’t like you. Player management and people management might not be on coaching courses, but don’t be kidded by associations. It is the most important quality a coach can have.” Football is about tactics, detail, preparation and standards. But above all, it is about people.
