Jonathan Banks was hesitant to reprise the role of Mike Ehrmantraut. After Breaking Bad, he genuinely felt Mike's story was already complete and worried that returning might diminish the character. He didn't want Mike to exist just for familiarity or easy fan service. What changed his mind was how Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould described Better Call Saul. They told him the show wouldn't make Mike bigger or louder. It would go in the opposite direction and focus on who he was before becoming that man—quieter, sadder, more human. Banks later admitted that Better Call Saul gave Mike an emotional depth and inner life that Breaking Bad never had time to explore.
