Jonathan Winters didn’t need a script to make Johnny Carson lose it. He could start with a carpet, jump to an old drinking story, somehow end up talking about a highway patrolman, bears, lions and rabbits and somehow make the whole thing feel completely natural. That was the magic...

The interesting thing about Jonathan Winters wasn't that he could make Johnny Carson laugh. It was that he refused to remain one person long enough for Carson to figure him out. The cowboy. The Marine. The painter in the basement with a flashlight. Most performers build a recognizable identity and protect it. Winters kept destroying his. That looked like play. It was actually control. He decided who was speaking, when that person disappeared, and what came next. Maybe the real freedom wasn't becoming famous. It was becoming someone new before the world could decide who he was. Would you rather be unforgettable or impossible to define?

Johnny Carson and Liv Ullmann were flirting so naturally on television that her husband genuinely thought something might be going on. What makes this conversation even funnier is that Liv openly admits she really liked Johnny, while Johnny keeps finding new ways to joke about stealing her away. Some chemistry is impossible to hide even when you’re only joking. 🎬 The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson Do you think harmless flirting can still cause problems in a relationship?

Burt Reynolds was already becoming a major star in 1973, but this interview shows how naturally he could turn a Hollywood conversation into a relaxed hangout. Reynolds talks with Johnny Carson about the five movies and six TV specials he had been working on, his interest in music and Las Vegas, and his early days at Florida State. Then Carson surprises him with an old fraternity photograph. Reynolds’ reaction to seeing that college photo is one of the best parts of the interview. For a moment, the movie star disappears and you’re just watching a guy being reminded of who he was before Hollywood. That’s what makes these old Carson interviews so good. You get to see stars outside the polished image audiences knew from their movies. Reynolds could joke about his past, talk about where his career was going, and still seem completely at ease being himself. There’s something timeless about seeing a future Hollywood icon laugh at an old picture of himself.

Rodney Dangerfield could make a room lose it before you even had time to process the last joke. The way he jumps from his family, his wife, his neighborhood, his looks and his terrible luck without ever slowing down is what makes this performance so good. And Johnny Carson laughing through half the set makes it even better. You can tell he knows Rodney is about to hit him with another one before he’s even finished the previous joke. This is peak Rodney Dangerfield. The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, 1979. Which Rodney joke from this performance would you have remembered the longest?you

There were certain rules when appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He didn't like to be touched or messed with ever. If you did, you'd be banned for life. In 1974 Burt Reynolds was a major star, and did all those things, and Johnny loved it!

Did you follow Andy Kaufman before Taxi, or was that your first introduction to him? A lot of people remember Kaufman from Taxi as Latka, the mechanic with that unforgettable funny voice. Then you see his late 70s Johnny Carson appearances doing Archie Bunker and Ed McMahon impressions, and suddenly you understand why people called him a comedy genius. The awkward voice, dry timing, and completely serious delivery somehow make it even funnier.

Johnny Carson introduced Sam Kinison as an outrageous comedian. Then Kinison walked out and sang “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” so beautifully that, for a moment, you could almost forget who was standing on the stage. Then he started talking. The performance quickly turned into classic Kinison taking a romantic song and turning it into a furious conversation about betrayal, heartbreak and a woman who supposedly “never loved” him. Carson was fascinated by the contrast. He talked about hearing Kinison’s tape for the first time and being completely caught off guard by how good his voice was. But the conversation became even more interesting when Kinison talked about his past. Before comedy, he had been a Pentecostal preacher. He married young, went through a painful divorce, became disillusioned with that life and eventually decided to go into comedy. That makes this appearance fascinating in hindsight. You're watching a comedian known for screaming and outrageous material sitting with Johnny Carson, casually revealing that he once stood in front of a congregation as a preacher and then proving he could actually sing. It’s a side of Sam Kinison that doesn't always get remembered. 🎬 The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. ( May 24, 1989 )
