Jony Ive tells Patrick Collison about the first time he saw a Mac (and why it convinced him he had to meet Steve Jobs and Apple team): “I remember discovering the Mac [in the late-1980s]…what I realized was that what we make stands testament to who we are and...

On a related note, here’s something I wrote about the patents (and psycholog) behind Apple’s box packaging…which Steve Jobs and Ive said “could be theatre”:

I like the guy, but the first 30 seconds or so could easily be used as a meme for… well, a lot of “say something that sounds like you’re saying something, but don’t really say anything” things.

He says we notice carelessness. When Apple switched to OS X, they jettisoned the excellent Japanese UI, never restored it, & for years offered only the pdf of instructions for the old UI OR Help in Japanese. NOT something no one wd see, something no one they cared about wd see

Steve Jobs caused major damage to 4 generations of people. He's the reason people's intelligence took a nosedive. He's one of the worst human beings to ever live.

Jensen Huang on how to convey your vision to employees: Question: "How you convey your vision to your employees and how you keep that sense of urgency in them so that they continue improving themselves?" Jensen: "So the question is how do I convey my vision to the employees and how do we convey a sense of urgency? First of all, you convey your vision the good old-fashioned way. And it's about telling a story. I'm not the best storyteller in the world, and I'm not the best, I don't enjoy public speaking, actually. And if you were to give me a choice right now between doing this versus just answering one of your emails, and I'll give you all my email address, you could all send me an email, and I'd be glad to respond to it. I'd rather do that. You know, I'm still an engineer, and I'm introverted by design, I guess. And I don't find myself particularly articulate. And so I don't enjoy the process of public speaking. But you have to force yourself to do it. It's for a good reason. It's for a good cause. I have to admit that speaking to my employees or speaking to NVIDIA's employees is the single most intimidating thing that I do. It freaks me out. And the reason for that is because I respect their time so much, and I know how important the meeting is, that in your own mind, the bar and the responsibility is extraordinary. But you have to put yourself, and I'm speaking to engineers here, you have to force yourself to communicate at a bigger picture level. You have to force yourself to practice. And it's something that over time you get better at. In terms of how do we communicate a sense of urgency? Just through action. They have to see that when I make decisions or when I do something or when something is near my field of influence, my scope of influence, that I do it with a sense of urgency. And it's amazing what that does. People simply pick up those habits from you. If your CEO works hard, you'll work hard. If your CEO cares, you'll care. If your CEO loves this company, you'll love this company. If your CEO is passionate about the work that we do, you'll be passionate about the work that we do. If your CEO does everything with an extraordinary sense of purpose and intensity and sense of urgency, you will too. It's amazing what happens when you're a leader of anything, whether you're a leader of a project team or, right? As I say that, you could almost everybody just, yeah, I get it. Leader of a project team or a leader of a lab team. The behavior and the values and the habits of that leader has an amazing way of rubbing off on everybody else."

"And so sometimes like God speaks to me, I think primarily God speaks through me through action. And I think he speaks through everyone through action. You know, we like to talk a lot, but not a lot of people like to live it out. And I make mistakes, but I want to try to live it out to the best of my ability. I think secondly, through the way of communication, I've always had a heart to make complex ideas simpler to understand because I'm not a smart guy. I have a hard time reading Shakespeare and complex literature, so I like doing that. But sometimes I'll be sitting and talking with someone, and I feel like God tells me something about the person. They're struggling with something or if they've got a physical ailment and I'll ask. And sometimes it's true. Sometimes it's not. I'm not not discouraged if it's right or wrong, but if it's right, sometimes God speaks through that way. Those are a few ways God speaks through me, but, but the intrusive thing is so beautiful because I think he can speak to everyone intrusively and it is so sweet when it happens. And it was, it was happening this morning to me in the shower, which is so sweet and beautiful, you know. I struggle a lot with what people think about me because I've always struggled with people pleasing before being a Christian. And so, you know, if I'm misunderstood or someone takes something in the way that I didn't say it, I get hurt because I'm like, oh, I didn't mean it that way. Or, you know, whatever. So I'm kind of talking to Jesus and I'm in the shower praying and I'm going, man, God, I want to be more like you. I want to be how you want me to be. I want to love you. And I want to be your son. And I just want to focus on being yours. And I don't want to care what other people think. And this, this and that. And Jesus was speaking to me about some practical things I needed to do. Like it would help you if you, you know, stopped looking at what people say online. It would help if you deleted Instagram. And it would help if you did this. And, it would help if you would just trust other people to do what they're supposed to do. So you can focus on being mine. And I'm sitting there in the shower going like, wow, this is so good. And it's so hard, but it's so good." Bryce Crawford, Minister

🎥| “Well, for starters, it's not the first time I've heard a story like that, you know, of people kind of being inspired to work in the industry. Um, and I think that's really cool, you know. I've always been a big believer that the more fans that work in the music industry, the better for the music and the better for everyone, really. You know, they're definitely the most passionate people. Um, you know, especially the likes of like managements or record labels, these kind of opinions are vital. [Fan: We live it, like, quite literally.] Absolutely, absolutely, yeah. There's not really, you know, it's not about kind of guessing, it's, like you say, you guys kind of live that life. So, I think it's really, really important, it's really cool that it seems to be happening more and more, um, which I think is great. Um, in terms of the relationship with the fans, something I really, really cherish. it's a really funny thing, you know, when you've grown up together, but that ‘together’ to me is, you know, a decent chunk of people. It's a funny concept to me, really, in general. But I feel very, very lucky to have it, and I feel really—I think I've always felt quite protective over my fans as well, and I think... that is a nature of kind of growing up together, you know? I feel like we've got each other's back like that. [Fan: I feel like you have a unique relationship with your fans that is not common amongst artists today, so we really appreciate that, the effort you put in and the care.] I like to, yeah, I like to think so. I mean, I feel very, very blessed that wherever I am, you know, wherever I am, there's a certain kind of level of support and passion, you know? And that... there's a friend, exactly, that's lovely.” via Jesslyn Downey

😑 “You know, when I did the 250, there was nothing I could do. It was 250. It was 250. So I can't see -- that was my baby. The country happened to be 250 years old. But what I did do is during my first term, I got the Olympics, and I got the Great Soccer. You know that whole deal, right? I got -- we call it soccer. They call it football. I got them both. I got the Olympics. First, I got the Olympics, and I got it. I was president. And I said, you know, it's a shame. It's a shame. I got the World Cup, and I have the Olympics, and I did it. And you have no idea. President Obama didn't want to make a call to the Olympics. You know why? Because he went to Switzerland or wherever, and he said, you know, if a president goes to get the Olympics, you have to have a deal. You have to be chosen. He went there, and he came in fourth, so he hated them, I guess. And he was unwilling to make a call, and they called me up. The Democrats called me up, actually, from Los Angeles, and I said, I'll do it. I made the call, and I couldn't get the people off the phone because they were so starved for love, because nobody would call them from -- anyway, we made a deal. I got the Olympics. Then we got the World Cup with Johnny. We got the World Cup, and I got them both, and I looked at my people. I said, isn't it a shame? I got these two, but it wasn't in the next four years. It was right after that, and the one after that. And I got the Olympics, and I got the World Cup, and we also have 250, so that's a pretty wild term. But I got these two things that are incredible. Nobody else could have done it. I'm telling you, everybody wanted it. Nobody could have done it. And I said, and I won't be president, because I'll be president for four more years, but it won't be -- and then they cheated and rigged the election. They rigged -- you know, they don't even turn off the cameras when I say that now, because now they know it's true, too. But they knew it was true before. Remember, the cameras used to immediately turn off. You see all those beautiful red lights go off. Now I can say whatever I want, because then they know it's true. But they knew it was true before. It's fake news. That's why they call it. But you know what? This term is much more consequential than if I had done it the more traditional way. This was slightly harder, believe me. It's slightly more dangerous, because they're criminals on the other side that tried to put your president in jail and went after him, just like they do in third-world countries. And we all beat em together. We beat em because our level of popularity was so high.”

260612 #ALD1 DAY1 FANCON #LEO 🦁: Ah... wow... Hello. To be honest, we were preparing for this fancon at the same time as our comeback, so we didn't have much time and I was really worried. I kept wondering, 'Will we be able to do well?'. I had a lot of worries and thoughts like that. And... I don't know, since we haven't performed in a while, I think I was personally very worried. I felt anxious and had a lot of mixed emotions. But now that I'm actually standing on stage, hearing the cheers of our fans and feeling this energy we share together firsthand, I'm truly so, so happy. I don't know, I really believe this is just the beginning, I truly believe that. In the future, we are going to become a team that rises all the way to the top, so I hope everyone here today will stay with us until that day comes. We will work really hard. Thank you so much! And also to our global fans... yeah! Oh... Honestly, thank you guys so much for being here, for being present here at our first fancon. Trump: Now they'll say all these stories are terrible. Well, these stories have, you know, you heard my story in the boat with the shark, right? I got killed on that. They thought I was rambling. I'm not rambling. We can't get the boat to float. The battery is so heavy. So then I start talking about asking questions. You know, I have an, I had an uncle who was a great professor at MIT for many years, long, I think the longest tenure ever. Very smart, had three different degrees and you know, so I have an aptitude for things. You know, there is such a thing as an aptitude. I said, well, what would happen if this boat is so heavy and started to sink and you're on the top of the boat. Do you get electrocuted or not? In other words, the boat is going down and you're on the top, will the electric currents flow through the water and wipe you out? And let's say there's a shark about 10 yards over there. Would I have to immediately abandon or could I ride the electric down and he said, sir, nobody's ever asked us that question. But sir, I don't know. I said, well, I want to know because I guarantee you one thing, I don't care what happens. I'm staying with the electric, I'm not getting over with it. So I tell that story. And the fake news they go, he told this crazy story with electric. It's actually not crazy. It's sort of a smart story, right? Sort of like, you know, it's like the snake, it's a smart when you, you figure what you're leaving in, right? You're bringing it in the, you know, the snake, right? The snake and the snake. I tell that and they do the same thing
