Leigh-Anne says it felt like “no one cared” when she first opened up about the racism she faced as the sole Black member of a girl group, but other Black girl group members reached out to tell her they understood: “I did speak about some of my experiences in 2016 and it just fell on deaf ears, because no one cared. No one was talking about it. Then, when I was speaking about doing the documentary [Leigh-Anne: Race, Pop and Power] a year after, my mum was just like, ‘Leigh-Anne, that’s amazing, but no one cares.’ And she was right! At that time, nobody did. Obviously the [Black Lives Matter] movement was happening [in 2020], and all of a sudden the world had woken up and everyone was talking about race. I just felt like I could really say something now, and it’s gonna get listened to. When I did speak about some of my experiences, Black females from girlbands were reaching out to me like, ‘I literally feel the same,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is wild.
