Sources within the Taliban told us that, following heavy casualties among Taliban forces, the Taliban regime requested Jumma Khan Fateh to halt the fighting. A jirga subsequently met with Fateh, and after consultations and agreement on his demands, he agreed to stop the fighting on his own terms. Jumma Khan Fateh and Fasihuddin Fitrat were then flown by Taliban helicopter to Faizabad, from where Fitrat will accompany Fateh to Kabul.

Badakhshan’s Gold Rush Turns into a Gunfight A serious confrontation is unfolding in Nusay district of Badakhshan between Taliban forces and fighters loyal to Juma Khan Fateh, a prominent Tajik commander from within the Taliban system. The fighting is now verified by both sides. There are deaths and injuries on both sides, although reliable figures remain difficult to establish. The Taliban has deployed special forces and, according to local sources, three helicopters to the area. Internet and telecommunications have been restricted, while Fateh’s fighters are reportedly using Tajikistani SIM cards and internet networks from across the nearby border. At the heart of the dispute is gold mining and who controls the money, influence and armed networks around it. The political turnaround has been striking. Only last week, Fateh was in Kabul, staying at Sirajuddin Haqqani’s guest house as efforts were made to settle the dispute. Today, Taliban circles are calling him a “rebel.” Afghan politics rarely offers a long notice period. One week you are a guest in Kabul; the next, helicopters are apparently being sent in your direction. There is also an uncomfortable historical parallel. In 2022, the Hazara Taliban commander Mawlawi Mahdi broke with the leadership after another dispute involving local power and mining resources. He was eventually killed after his rebellion was crushed. He had been detained in Iran and handed back, while the Taliban said he was killed while trying to cross the border. Will Fateh meet Mahdi’s fate, or will Badakhshan prove different? Much depends on whether Fateh remains isolated. Badakhshan has already become a key battleground for armed resistance groups in recent months. If local Taliban commanders and resistance networks stay out, Kandahar holds the advantage. If they begin siding with Fateh, this could quickly grow far beyond a fight over gold. Badakhshan is now testing how far Kandahar can centralise power before local loyalty turns into armed resistance.

According to sources, the women were participating in a protest at a residence in northern Kabul when the Taliban took them into custody. A video obtained by Amu captures the moment when a group of Taliban members entered the premises, attempting to detain the women. Taliban has not commented on the arrest of the women activists.
