Just 8 days after the final stack of Superheavy-B16. B17's common dome section has been moved to the front of MB1 for stacking operations. As expected, the pace of vehicle assembly will have to increase dramatically in order to keep up with SpaceX's goals for Starship Launch Cadence in... 2025. We are rapidly approaching Flight 7, and Booster 17 is the Flight 10 Booster. Assuming SpaceX plans to carry out 20 to 25 launches in 2025, this booster will need to be fully stacked, cryo tested, integrated with its 33 raptor engines, static fire tested, and receive final launch outfitting 8 to 10 weeks from today. To date, the record holder for fastest assembly to launch time is B13 which took 41 weeks from initial stacking to launch. This means the assembly and test campaign for B17 needs to be at least 4 times faster than the previous best (assuming there are no re-flights's of boosters within the next 4 launches). If every booster from here on has one re-flight before B17's inaugural launch, then the assembly to launch process only needs to be around 2 times faster than the current best. I should note that B14 is expected to be the new record holder. If it launches on Jan 10 it will have been just under 40 weeks. Another important detail is that from what we can tell, this a Version 1 Booster. This means that we should expect a minimum of 4 more launches before Pad B is operational. My bet is around 12 launches. Still missing a lot of vital infrastructure (fuel, oxidizer & nitrogen), and I think ship landing legs are gonna prove necessary, as well as practical. Need them for Moon/Mars anyway. Catching booster makes sense; ship, just trying to show off. imho

#SpaceX is preparing to move the massive new #Starship launch mount structure for #Starbase Pad B to the launch site for installation. In this post, I’ll give an overview of the design and use my 3D models to calculate the structure’s mass in its current configuration. This new launch mount, nearly an entire redesign, is SpaceX’s best effort at correcting many of the issues discovered with the mount at Pad A after a handful of launches. The only similarity between this mount and the original launch mount for Pad A is that 20 arms will still be used to support the #SuperHeavy booster before liftoff. However, the arms and everything else making up the structure are entirely different.

SpaceX is not attempting to catch the Super Heavy Booster for Starship Flight 9 due to a strategic decision to prioritize other mission objectives and reduce risks. The booster, Booster 14-2, previously flew on Flight 7 and is set to perform a landing burn in the Gulf of America, instead of returning to the launch tower for a catch. This choice likely stems from the need to focus on resolving ongoing issues with the Starship upper stage, which has failed in the last two flights (Flights 7 and 8) due to engine-related anomalies. By opting for a simpler booster landing profile, SpaceX can concentrate on testing and refining the Block 2 Starship design, particularly its heat shield and reentry capabilities, without the added complexity of a tower catch.

Why are many in the space community calling SpaceX Starship Flight 11 the Flight of many “Lasts”? That’s because it is true and represents a major transition from the more Wild Wild West of prototype development to a more operational, maturing space launch and spacecraft system. After Flight 11, much of the original orbital launch site systems, from the launch mount, to the water deluge & supporting systems are about to be replaced by a brand-new & much more reliable, survivable & rapidly reusable system. These changes will even make the iconic imagery we are familiar with just historical memories. I thought we would look at one aspect of the Booster design to help answer this question, specifically how well the new design reduces gravity losses during the launch to hot staging portion of flight. Come alone with me for a simplified aerodynamics & rocket engineering discussion and then do a direct performance comparison using video clips from the SpaceX live streams. My intent is to help appreciate some of the effort the engineers have put into the new V3 booster and Raptor engine designs to increase the capabilities of the Starship system and greatly increase the payload to orbit potential of Starship. Obviously there are many other considerations (it is rocket science), but I hope you find this helpful.

As we wait for Flight 12 of Starship, I thought I’d share some of the images, sights and sounds around Starbase today. Nice views of the launch suite, another deluge system test, a walk around the Starfactory & views into the Gigabay which is well into construction. So, what is coming up? After midnight tonight, expect both Booster 19 and Ship 39 to depart the production site for the launch pad and then stacking the ship onto the booster ahead of a planned Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR) tomorrow. Both the Ship and Booster already have the FTS installed and the ship is loaded with the payload (20 Starlink Simulators and 2 More with reaction wheels and cameras) so if all goes well with the WDR tomorrow, they wont need to de-stack and can go right into prep for Wednesday launch attempt, which is currently planned for 20 May at 5:30 PM CST. So, the next 48 hours should have plenty of activity here at Starbase! Hoping for good luck for the Starship team!

🇺🇸 STARSHIP FLIGHT 11: SHIP 38 HEADS TO THE PAD Elon confirmed launch is set for Monday ~5PM CT, building on the success of Flight 10 with high-stakes upgrades and aggressive testing. The booster, reused from Flight 8, will launch with 24 flight-proven Raptor engines and test a new 13-5-3 landing burn configuration, ending with a hover and drop into the Gulf of Mexico - no catch attempt. Starship will perform in-space tests, including a Raptor engine relight and deployment of 8 Starlink simulators. These are suborbital and will burn up on reentry. Reentry is designed to push limits: heat shield tiles have been deliberately removed in vulnerable areas to stress-test the system. The ship will attempt a final dynamic banking maneuver, testing the subsonic return profile for future landings at Starbase, with splashdown set for the Indian Ocean. Meet our second booster, with all modules mated: “Never Tell Me The Odds.” I think the odds of landing this booster are a lot better than 3,720-to-1. Both strakes are in place, and BE-4 installation is well underway. Great job by the team as we continue getting our second booster ready for launch.

Coming to SpaceX StarbaseTX for Flight 12? Well, there are new public access restrictions you need to be aware of that have recently been put into place. All of the area behind (south) of the launch site, including the mud flats and most of the sand dunes are now off limits, which is a big departure from what we have been used to for the previous 11 Flights and before that too. There are new signs and roped off areas, part of both the expansion and construction at the launch site and a wildlife/bird refuge that extends throughout this area. Also, some new restrictions as to where you can park and observe ship and booster rollout operations. The most important thing to keep in mind is follow the instructions you are given by the county Sherrif and the City of Starbase security personnel and do not cross into private or protected areas. Starbase is a very special place that is unlike any other in the world, but over time, there will be more and more restrictions to what you are able to see and do. As always, I recommend you come here sooner than later before we lost all access. I hope this public service announcement is helpful!

It's my speculation that this will be the first time we have seen a full cryo test (both tanks) performed on a booster, since Booster 9, more than 2 years ago. This is a result of long awaited upgrades to the propellant storage and distribution system at Massey's 🎥: Avid Space
