I still haven’t seen any word from @BBC issuing an apology for the misinformation they put out to millions who must have watched the documentary with David Attenburgh, regarding hedgehogs eating slugs. It really was very careless and unprofessional and they should fix it. 🦔🦔

I know slugs are a bit of a pest for veg growers but please don't use slug pellets. I use slug collars and, as long as no leaves create a 'bridge' to the ground, they are brilliant for keeping your young plants slug free.

I have found sticky copper tape round pot plants keeps slugs/snails off without hurting them, apparently it gives them a mild tingle. Also wrap the stuff round feeding bowls & over hog feeder thresholds 😉
😊This is yet another myth I'm afraid. The tape alone is inert, it doesn't carry any electrical charge. But what really works is the thorough cleaning you gave the pot before applying the tape.🥰 Cleaning old slime trails away deters slugs, as they use them as a map and a transport system (it save energy having to produce slime if you can travel on another's).
I thought that but have watched slugs pull back when they've touched the tape so there must be something about it they don't like - daresay they'd overcome that if hungry enough!
It's very hard to observe purely without prejudice - we tend to see what we expect to see. 🥰 But anything is worth a try!😁

Nature really is incredible! Good of the slug to have such an important job to do. I had no idea. I wish everyone had a natural space of healthy garden for the Hedgehog with fresh water and backup of kitten food. 💕🦔💕
Yes, me too. It's an old fashioned notion but when I was a kid, every shop had a dish of water outside, and so did a lot of houses. Mostly for passing dogs, but for wildlife too, and always in hot weather. We didn't have plastic dishes then, they were metal, so that'd be a lot easier now, and something I'd love to see make a comeback. Last year it would have saved so many lives.

Not completely. But a lot safer than it is for mammals, like dogs, humans and hedgehogs. Birds have a different immune response from mammals, and aren't the ideal host this parasite needs to complete its life cycle. So although some birds may get lungworm, the lungworm is usually unable to thrive and cause a chronic lung infection, unlike in mammals.
Really helpful. Some people use ducks for garden slug control.
Yes, but that's an artificial form of control, and unfair on the ducks as they suffer from lungworm too. In a balanced garden, where most things are left natural, there will not be an overwhelming amount of slugs that need any form of control.🥰

Yes, they will eat your flowers and plants if you tidy away all the dead foliage and muck that they like to eat!😁 Another good reason to not worry about being so tidy in your garden.🥰

This information is of extraordinary importance Pauly !! Nature is an interconnected cycle. This is why we have major problems when humans meddle or interfere by decimating one or more species, either at the beginning, intermediate, or end of that cycle.
That's absolutely right, Jane. Our eco system is extraordinary, magnificent! The finest plan with such incredible genius interconnectedness. It is perfect. By us detracting pieces from that plan, even if only small and seemingly insignificant, we weaken the whole interconnected structure. It takes only one small knock to start a domino effect.
I hate killing anything, but slugs are a pain and decimate many plants in my garden. My hydrangeas get ruined every year along with many other plants. On a separate note, this guy visited a few years ago. Even my cat was fascinated by him, or her.
Killing is not the answer, it very rarely is. But in this case you actually make your problem worse because, like many creatures, slugs replicate according to resources. So if you make a gap in their number they will breed faster in order to fill it. The only answer is to restore your garden's balance. We have been brainwashed into thinking nature needs 'tidying' by profiteering gardening companies. Allow grass to grow long and leave the weeds and dead plants - these are the things slugs like to eat. If you remove them, of course they will eat your prized plants, but if you stop destoying their natural food, you will eventually achieve a balance.🥰
That’s all well and good, but not everyone enjoys having a garden full of weeds and dead plants, with long grass. The slugs can go to my neighbour’s garden which is exactly as you describe.
I often find slug trails across my carpets and shoes. Are you saying I could be affected healthwise? Not practical to wash shoes
Well, unless you were intending to lick your shoes or eat off the carpet, you'll be fine, don't worry.😁 Normal good hygiene (washing your hands before preparing or eating food or drinks) is enough to keep us safe.

Our hens would eat the black slugs but they wouldn't touch the big orange slugs. And if you've ever accidentally touched an orange slug, you'll know why 😨
Yes, hens do like a slug occasionally. No, I've never touched an orange one, but I've heard tales.
I always say hello to the slugs in my compost bin. They especially love mushy cucumber!
Aww!😁 Please make sure your compost bin is well sealed and that no animals can gain entrance to it. Compost bins are attractive to animals, because of the heat they generate, but the gases they emit are deadly to wildlife.
