Just a quick one about slugs and snails, as it's still a common question (due to some recently published misinformation). Slugs and snails are the intermediate host of lungworm, so can pass this fatal parasite to any mammal that is unfortunate enough to be forced by starvation to eat... them, or is contaminated by their slime trail. This includes hedgehogs - they don't have any magical protection properties. But slugs and snails are also our heros, here's why: As well as providing food for many amphibians, reptiles and birds, they protect us humans from all sorts of potentially fatal pathogens. Take bird poo for example. Birds don't wee. Any water they consume is used and absorbed by their body. This means they don't have to have a bladder, so they are lighter for flying. Instead of wee they pass pure uric acid paste with their poo (that's the white bit on top), and so their poo is water resistent. (Anyone who has tried to clean it off their car is painfully aware of this) So if it's water resistent, therefore the rain can't wash it away, why aren't we all knee deep in bird poo? Because of slugs! Slugs eat bird poo. Isn't that brilliant? Slugs and snails are decomposers that consume various organic matter, including rotting plants, dead animals, and animal droppings, finding bird poo a nutritious source of decay from which to extract nutrients from. So slugs - don't eat them, wash everything that touches them or their slime trail, but love them for being nature's most industrious clean up crew!🥰show more

They DON'T eat slugs and snails, they are not on their menu no matter who tells you, or how much you trust them to be right about other things. Of course you might occasionally see this because an animal dying of hunger will eat anything to stop the pain. Starving children are seen eating mud, but that doesn't mean mud is on the human menu. The question I'm being asked most often lately is: "Where have all my hedgehogs gone?" If the hedgehogs you regularly feed haven't made an appearance lately, don't worry. It happens every year at this time. They have found a natural souce of food - possibly a clump of nettles full of newly emerged caterpillars - and they will make the most of this bonanza while it lasts. (Hedgehogs will ALWAYS prefer their own naturally foraged food over what we provide, so you can never overfeed them or make them dependent on you). So please keep a little food out every night, as they will return when the bonanza runs out, and it'll be when you least expect it. Put a saucer over it, to keep it fresh for longer and to keep the slugs out. And this is the perfect time to make the most of their absence by giving their house a good clean and preparing it for autumn.

This is the doe that ate all the bell pepper plants, carrots and cabbage out of my garden. She had two babies and is now bringing them up to the house to show them the garden. They have tons of grass and other plants to eat right there by the water, yet they still come up on the hill to eat the garden. Check out the one fawn that has super cold ears on the thermal. I don't know why it's ears are so cold, I have never seen any other deer with cold ears like that. I guess they can cut the blood flow off when they want to. Some of my dogs are lying about 50 feet away from them and aren't even barking or running them off lol. They are part coyote and love to chase the deer in the woods but can't chase the ones away from the house. Zeus would get the deer but he stays inside with us. At the end of the video is one of the large alligators waiting for a deer or something to come by.

They don't care if their credit is ruined, because they are never going to be able to afford a home anyways. So the attitude now is, just ignore it and live for today. The entire system is ph*cked so why bother caring. From their perspective, it sort of makes sense and I don't blame them.

Kitten update #15: As you all kindly warned me, I've spent the morning watching the kitties play with a paper bag, an old sock tied in a knot, and a crumpled ball of aluminum foil while turning their noses up at the fancy toys I offer them. Wet food has turned out not to be exactly the gamechanger I'd hoped for, so far. They just eat it and still cry for their bottles. The nice thing is that I can leave the saucer for them to eat in their crate so they don't wake up and immediately transform into screaming gremlins charging me like Persians at Plataea. One thing that's been surprising is that despite what a dirty process learning to eat wet food is, they are cleaning themselves up very well afterwards. I'd kind of assumed I'd have to teach/encourage them a little but they are way ahead of me. Gray Tuxedo, for example, seems to think that eating is a two-hand job:

This is the pen of Leah, the morning after her first night's sleep here. Every black dot you see is a tick. They are black because they're full of her blood, and growing. (This is one of the reasons why I have only white bedding and floor coverings. If she was in newspaper you'd never see this). Poor little Leah is absolutely smothered in hundreds of ticks, and has fleas, too. Despite the old wives' tale, it's very rare for a hedgehog to have fleas. So rare in fact, that a professor of entomology who studies these sorts of things pays me £20 a go when I send him fleas. Additionally, hedgehog fleas are species-specific, so they can't infest or live on any other animal. A hedgehog has to be seriously ill or incredibly weak to attract ectoparasites such as ticks and fleas. And poor Leah is that weak - she is suffering from starvation, AND she has just given birth. A couple clearing out their shed found poor little Leah huddled with her babies in a pile of blankets, where she'd given birth. They live in army barracks, and their garden is tiny, with no suitable hedgehog habitat. Everywhere is kept 'neat'. Despite this, somehow Leah survived. With a shed substituting for a hedgerow and army blankets instead of leaves and moss, Leah managed to make a maternity nest and have her precious babies. But with no food, she was unable to produce enough milk to feed them, and one by one, the babies died. By the time she was found, out of the 7 babies she had given birth to, only 3 were still alive. I saw the bodies so could tell how many days they had survived. The lovely finders had no idea that things were so desperate for our hedgehogs, and that the dramatic decline in insects, due to the way we are 'tidying' our gardens, meant that they are now suffering starvation. Hedgehogs don't eat slugs and snails, they eat beetles and catapillars. Caterpillars make up almost half a hedgehog's diet, and their emergence is perfectly timed with peak baby season, the time of most need. We're in June, peak butterfly time, but how many have you seen lately? Like most people, the finders were completely unaware of how our bad destructive habits are impacting our precious wildlife, until seeing it with their own eyes. They are now committed to improving not just their garden, but the whole Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, and went home armed with leaflets and kitten biscuits and determination. Meanwhile poor tick infested Leah and her 3 surviving babies are safe and warm here, and she's getting good nourishment and care. It's so important these tiny 5 day old babies don't fall victim to the ticks, as they would not survive. I can't use drugs or chemicals as Leah is far too weak and her babies far too vulnerable. So it's just a matter of cleaning her out every day - the very last thing to be subjecting a new mum to. Despite all her hardship, and me meddling, she's a wonderful mum and doing her best to nurture her sweet babies. Last night, her first night here, she ate an entire dish of special Mother and Baby food - enough normally for 2 or 3 hedgehogs. The sight of that empty dish absolutely broke me. It's too early for a prognosis on Leah and the babies, but already, because of them, her little part of the world is going to become more hedgehog-friendly.

Ostriches are intensely social animals who understand their world through movement contact and the presence of their flock. They do not experience life with human concepts or human language but they do experience fear safety comfort and distress in ways that are clear measurable and deeply felt. When ostriches live together they learn the shapes sounds and movements of the birds around them. They feel secure when the flock is calm and they become anxious when others show signs of alarm. Their sense of safety depends entirely on the stability of the group. Any threat to one member of the flock creates a wave of fear through all of them. Because of this the emotional impact of violent handling and mass killing is not limited to the bird that is struck but spreads through every ostrich who sees hears or senses it. When force and confinement are imposed on them the birds experience a level of fear that overwhelms their natural coping behaviors. Ostriches respond to danger with flight or alert stillness and when neither response is possible they enter a state of acute stress that includes trembling pacing vocalizing or freezing in place. Their hearts race their muscles tense and their entire body prepares to escape. When they are surrounded or trapped they cannot understand why the danger cannot be avoided. The sense of helplessness for a prey animal is not a thought but a physical shock that floods them with stress and panic. To a creature who survives through movement and awareness the loss of space and the inability to flee is a form of suffering in itself. The abuse of forcing ostriches to witness the injury or death of familiar flock mates creates another layer of distress. These birds recognize individuals. They notice when one of their companions collapses or cries out. They become restless and agitated when a bird they know is harmed. They remain close to fallen birds and often attempt to investigate or stay near them because their instinct pushes them to stay with the group even when the group is being destroyed. The emotional meaning of this moment is not symbolic but immediate. The flock is breaking apart. The cues of danger multiply. The birds see others in pain or falling and their own fear grows with each new sign of suffering. When violent killing happens around them ostriches sense it as the collapse of their only system of safety. They are not built to make sense of destruction happening in their own flock. Instead they respond with escalating panic. Their bodies show it clearly through rapid breathing frantic shifts in posture and attempts to move closer to surviving flock mates. They do not understand why the danger continues or why the people near them are the source of harm. The stress they experience is intense enough to cause physical shock. Their final moments are dominated by confusion fear and the overwhelming instinct to escape a threat that cannot be avoided. The public often imagines large animals as numb or unaware but ostriches feel the world with a sensitivity shaped by millions of years as prey animals. Their eyes are sharp their hearing is attuned to stress in others and their bodies react strongly to fear and pain. When dozens or hundreds of birds are subjected to violence in a confined area every ostrich feels the fear of the others. The suffering does not happen to them one by one but as a shared experience of terror. This is an experience that no animal should ever be forced to endure. The reality is not clinical or quick. It is emotionally devastating to the animals caught in it because it destroys the flock bond that is their only sense of stability and then it destroys the birds themselves. Understanding this matters because it shows that the harm done to these animals was not only physical but deeply emotional. The ostriches suffered long before any final action was taken against their bodies. They suffered through fear they could not escape through the panic created by the collapse of their flock and through the helplessness of being unable to understand why the world around them suddenly turned violent. Recognizing this is essential because it reveals the true scale of what was done. This was not a neutral procedure. This was the infliction of terror on beings capable of feeling it powerfully. The public deserves to know that these birds were not indifferent creatures. When force and confinement are imposed on them the birds experience a level of fear that overwhelms their natural coping behaviors. Ostriches respond to danger with flight or alert stillness and when neither response is possible they enter a state of acute stress that includes trembling pacing vocalizing or freezing in place. Their hearts race their muscles tense and their entire body prepares to escape. When they are surrounded or trapped they cannot understand why the danger cannot be avoided. The sense of helplessness for a prey animal is not a thought but a physical shock that floods them with stress and panic. To a creature who survives through movement and awareness the loss of space and the inability to flee is a form of suffering in itself. The abuse of forcing ostriches to witness the injury or death of familiar flock mates creates another layer of distress. These birds recognize individuals. They notice when one of their companions collapses or cries out. They become restless and agitated when a bird they know is harmed. They remain close to fallen birds and often attempt to investigate or stay near them because their instinct pushes them to stay with the group even when the group is being destroyed. The emotional meaning of this moment is not symbolic but immediate. The flock is breaking apart. The cues of danger multiply. The birds see others in pain or falling and their own fear grows with each new sign of suffering. When violent killing happens around them ostriches sense it as the collapse of their only system of safety. They are not built to make sense of destruction happening in their own flock. Instead they respond with escalating panic. Their bodies show it clearly through rapid breathing frantic shifts in posture and attempts to move closer to surviving flock mates. Their final moments are dominated by confusion fear and the overwhelming instinct to escape a threat that cannot be avoided. The public often imagines large animals as numb or unaware but ostriches feel the world with a sensitivity shaped by millions of years as prey animals. Their eyes are sharp their hearing is attuned to stress in others and their bodies react strongly to fear and pain. When dozens or hundreds of birds are subjected to violence in a confined area every ostrich feels the fear of the others. The suffering does not happen to them one by one but as a shared experience of terror. This is an experience that no animal should ever be forced to endure. The reality is not clinical or quick. It is emotionally devastating to the animals caught in it because it destroys the flock bond that is their only sense of stability and then it destroys the birds themselves. Understanding this matters because it shows that the harm done to these animals was not only physical but deeply emotional. The ostriches suffered long before any final action was taken against their bodies. They suffered through fear they could not escape through the panic created by the collapse of their flock and through the helplessness of being unable to understand why the world around them suddenly turned violent. Recognizing this is essential because it reveals the true scale of what was done. This was not a neutral procedure. This was the infliction of terror on beings capable of feeling it powerfully. This post is mainly to help other rescues, but I know a lot of you will be interested as well. This sweet boy is Merlin. Merlin self admitted, but aside from his scabby nose from a bit of ringworm, he appeared fine. But I knew by his behaviour that he was sick. Healthy hedgehogs don't self admit to a hospital pen. Especially boys at this time of year - they are out chasing girls.🥰 I tested his poo in the lodge, where he booked himself into an open pen, and it was clear. I admitted him into hospital where he stayed overnight and left me 6 lovely poo samples. Every single one was clear. And yet his behaviour, his aggitation, the way he dug the corners of the pen, even his smell, told me through years of experience that he was sick. So I started treatment anyway. And as his condition improved, as he became hydrated and nourished, and the first antiparasitic administered, just like magic the confirmation appeared! A diagnosis needs to be made on observed behaviour and history (either your own or of the finders); the poo sample is *confirmation of the diagnosis*. So a hedgehog making unhealthy breathing sounds but producing clear poo samples is still unhealthy. You can't always rely on a sick hedgehog to produce parasite larvae or eggs in their poo sample, for several reasons, but the main reason is: Parasites, like all living organisms, have to preserve energy in order to stay alive and thrive. So when they find themselves in a hostile environment - a host who has become starving and dehydrated - they reduce their energy expenditure by temporarily shutting down systems that are not neccessary for life, like reproduction. They stop laying eggs and go into a sort of stasis, until conditions become welcoming again. Also of course, parasites don't constantly churn out eggs. They have a reproduction cycle. So not every sample will contain eggs. It's so frustrating when people contact me saying they have been sent home with a hedgehog who is clearly in audible respiratory distress, because the poo sample the rescue took was clear. As for sweet Merlin - at first it was a trickle; his poo showed just a few parasites, so microscope samples had to be very carefully scrutinised. But very quickly it became apparent that this poor boy was in fact full of deadly fluke, lungworm, and roundworm. He's only on day 3 of his treatment, so is still very sick, but clever Merlin got himself the help he needed just in time.

I will explain why Blacks destroy nice things like delivery robots: It's like the Goblin Slayer speech. A good analogy for migrants, illegals etc. When you have nothing, you grow envious/jealous of those who do, when they see these Delivery Robots, it makes them irrationally angry—its a nice thing, they don't have nice things, so they lash out and destroy/steal what they don't have. In their minds others are keeping the nice things from them. There is also entitlement: they think they "deserve" more (a good analogy for Israel/Judaism) and that they are justified in taking what they want, through force if necessary. Just like the Moon they are Green with Envy, just like the Goblin they want what they don't have, an extremely good analogy is India/Indians migrating to developed Western and Eastern countries, they want to be where things are nice and there are nice things. But never once does it occur to them that maybe the reason they don't have nice things (or that their places aren't nice) is because of they themselves. That's why these Black individuals (not all of course) have nothing, because they destroy anything nice anyone is stupid enough to give them, its why I have very little sympathy for the Black community in many places—its the reason for so many things. I think people that are scared of beavers are the people that like to manage the land completely as if it's a garden. Farmers and people that breed birds for game shooting and all that kind of stuff. I mean, for them, the land is only natural when it's what they've set it out to be, to look like and to have in it. Beavers are wild creatures, they do their own thing but they’re superb for flood water management, an issue that we have to deal with, as the climate crisis continues to bite - they are also fantastic for habitat creation. An issue we have to deal with because we've lost so much of our wildlife.

They don't go for the throat they go straight for the brain, piercing through the skull. Out of all the big cats, they are the most used to hunting in water and have one trick up their sleeve that their fellow Panthera brethren have yet to master: a bone-cracking bite to the back of the skull, which automatically paralyzes their crocodilian prey.
