I did the USA Green card system without a lawyer in the mid 1990’s. I married a guy from New York. We got investigated basically because it was so unusual for anyone to go through the process without a lawyer. We went in for an interview and the ICE agent was a real asshole - I was 22 and from New Zealand. We had already queued in the freezing cold for several hours just to get into the building. I was very, very annoyed at this dipsh*t and I remember standing in his cubicle and shouting get me your supervisor now! And slamming my fist onto his steel desk so hard that his pen cup flew into the air. My husband was sitting there looking stunned. Just as the ICE agent started to talk back, someone who was obviously senior rushed into the cubicle and ordered the ICE agent out. He was very nice, apologised, and said that my green card would arrive by post within two weeks. It did and there was no more nonsense from ICE.
