Stack of air presses harder at the ground and thinner the higher you go. That fade-out is the atmosphere. When there is almost nothing left, that is space. No glass dome. No suck. Just less and less air until it is empty. Water does the same job under gravity. It runs downhill until it cannot. That standing edge is the shoreline. Water is not “flat like a table.” It sits on the level gravity makes, which curves with the Earth.
