Saudi Aramco shut down the entire facility as a precautionary measure. No casualties were reported. The Saudi Defence Ministry confirmed it intercepted drones targeting the site, with debris causing the ground fire per The Hindu. Ras Tanura processes 550,000 barrels per day. It is one of the largest oil refining and export complexes on the planet. And Iran just hit it with a $30,000 drone. On September 14, 2019, drones and cruise missiles struck Saudi Aramco’s Abqaiq processing facility and Khurais oil field, temporarily halving Saudi output by 5.7 million barrels per day. It ended because Saudi Arabia spent a decade building the economic, religious and diplomatic weight that made accommodation with Riyadh worth more to Ankara than confrontation. Investment. Mediation. Religious authority. Doors quietly closed. Soft power in its least glamorous form, and its most effective. I think we should be grateful for that. We rarely are. Turkey is now moving toward the Arab world, not away from it. On 7 August, in Mecca, Erdoğan, Mohammed bin Salman and Shehbaz Sharif signed a joint defence agreement: an attack on one is an attack on all three. It did not come from nowhere. Ankara joined a Riyadh-led maritime coalition in late July, one of fourteen founding members. The 2023 drone contract was Turkey's largest defence export deal at the time. This is the Middle East Western analysts spent fifteen years asking for. Two days before the signing, Steven A. Cook published a column in Foreign Policy arguing that strategic blunders have plagued Saudi Arabia's approach to the region. The verdict arrived before the ink was dry. Read it closely and it collapses. Cook says Riyadh has no strategy. Then he lists it: protect the economic transformation, avoid a wider war, lower tensions with Iran, stop armed factions from imposing facts by force, tie normalisation with Israel to a Palestinian state. Israel went after facilities that produce 730 million cubic meters of gas daily. The Strait of Hormuz is effectively dead. Traffic dropped 96% in the first 18 days of war, from thousands of transits to just 98. Saudi Arabia is now desperately pumping oil west through pipelines to Yanbu on the Red Sea to bypass the strait. If Iran hits Yanbu, analysts say 5-6 million barrels a day disappear from global markets and oil could hit $150. Brent crude has already jumped from the $70s to $115 since the war started. Early in the evening, Saudi Arabia was the first to be attacked, with two ballistic missiles hitting targets in Jubail, the world’s largest petrochemical complex. Subsequently, the Al Hosn and Bab Fields in the UAE were struck, along with the Mesaieed Petrochemical Complex in Qatar. Later that day, Iran targeted SAMREF in Yanbu on the Red Sea, the facility from which Saudi Arabia exports its oil. The company confirmed that a missile struck its installations. Israel’s Channel 14 also reported waves of Iranian attacks throughout the day, which continue into tonight. Additionally, tonight the Israeli Air Force struck Iranian naval bases and ships in the Caspian Sea, raising suspicions once again that the operation was launched from Azerbaijan. Over the last two days, Iran has been increasing its missile launches, defying the analysis of many respected experts out there.
