Congress shouldn’t get a penny during a shutdown.

No back pay either, or it means nothing.

This should be the default but even this wouldn’t solve it since we all know senators’ salaries are only a tiny part of their income. That’s why they’re millionaires…

They obviously need some sort of motivation to work and solve issues. They should feel the repercussions of not being paid, so they know how these shutdowns actually affect everyday American people. They are so far removed from any sort of consequences.

The House is subject to reelection every 2 years. The Senate is subject to reelection every 6 years, they get a longer term than the President. The House has about 217 Republicans up for reelection. The Senate has only about 22 republicans up for reelection. Thune is not up for reelection until 2028. These are some of the reasons why public sentiment and opinion can be so readily disregarded by the Senate. They only face reelection every 6 years, they figure that memories fade, and there are only about 20-22 Republican seats up for reelection this coming midterm election.
