Just learned that, in 1878, John Powell recommended USA state boundaries should be based on watersheds! Here's his map, draped on the globe, with modern watershed boundary lines in white. Imagine what might have been!

Yes - using watersheds to define boundaries would have been smart, especially as we are now seeing freshwater issues.

this would actually make sense in terms of state's rights. currently, the profit-seeking destruction of our planet and fear-stoked ideology of state governments is not cutting the mustard.
