Self checkout sucks. You don’t get a discount for scanning in your own food and if you’re in line, this shit can happen at self check out as well. Plus it takes people’s jobs.

Everyone knows that it is traditional to place the divider after your items. We all see it practiced every time we go to the grocery store. It is basic courtesy. While I wouldn't verbalize it, I do think that it is most often a deliberate act of defiance to not do so.
