And yes, those were real arrows. His arm held out was to show the direction he was going to the archer wouldn’t hit him. When it was done, he ran up to the director and almost killed him, screaming that he was trying to get him killed.

I need to see this. Ran is another masterpiece of Kurosawa's based on Shakespeare's King Lear.

"What if Macbeth had samurai and a guy getting shot with a million arrows at the end" is why Kurosawa is the master.

Nolan "I only use practical effects" , Akira Kurosawa as they shoot live arrows at his star actor "Hold my sake." 😆

I'm watching it without sound on. It's like a silent film too.

The best to ever do it, nobody can ever top Toshiro Mifune. 🐐🐐🐐🐐

I love the over-the-top nature of the scene and the dark comedic tone amidst the violence; you can tell Tarantino drew a lot of inspiration from that for his own films.

Only because it’s one of the greatest scenes in cinema of all time. 🎥

I was kind of shocked the first time i watched the movie because i had seen this clip so many times but it didn't show what's happening outside of the fortress and these incredible shots with the trees!

With Eric Idle responding to tweets about Monty Python today, I was reminded of one of my favorite bits of his from the Scott of the Antarctic sketch.

Kurosawa is so overrated. What the hell is this? Is he missing on purpose? I don't need this dramatic, try-hard directing—just get on with the killing.
