Inclusivity is important. Visibility is important. In an open, pluralist & liberal society, everyone needs to be represented. Proportionately. According to the last census, over 76% of people in Ireland are Christian - not just Irish people but Polish, Romanian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Filipino etc. etc.. So why would anyone choose to represent the average Irish home maker as a Muslim woman to young children in school? Muslims make up about 1% of the population. What is the purpose of this? What is the potential impact on children? What does this say about Irish identity & culture? What does this DO to Irish identity & culture? Does this representation mean official Ireland or the Department of Education endorses the veiling of women? What message is this sending to our girls? Is it a good one? Why would Ireland seek to normalise the hijab when women in the Middle East are dying in protest against it? Who approved this & did they ask any of these questions? What’s truly incredible about this is that the same Irish nationalists who fought to keep Ireland Irish - Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael - support this woman. These supposed nationalists who fought against British influence in Ireland now want Ireland to be subsumed by third world immigration, to the point that Irish culture and language is erased.
