He should compete on the LW with Mmodi. ■ In the 1st half, it was Monyane and Vilakazi on the right, and 2nd half it was Mmodi and Shinga with some of our best moments in attack. Overall, you can see the general attitude of this team changing. They want to play now. They want to stay on the ball and create chances from a position of control, not rely heavily on transitional moments to create chances. We have shown signs that we can control and be patient, but when opportunities to attack comes we are relentless, and we use a lot of speed to enter the final 3rd. We just need to work on the combinations and finishing in the final 3rd. Siphesihle Ndlovu and the Double Pivot: Tactical Analysis📝 Out of Possession Siphesihle Ndlovu is a box-to-box midfielder in its purest form. Defensively, he was excellent at recoveries, closing gaps, cutting off passing lanes, and making well-timed interceptions. His anticipation and positional awareness allowed him to support the defense effectively. He maintained a high work rate, consistently tracking back and covering spaces behind the press, which was crucial for stabilizing the fullbacks, especially with Monyane looking flat. Even during periods when his influence in possession dipped, Ndlovu continued to deliver a solid shift out of possession, working alongside Maboe to break up play, win tackles, and apply pressure on the ball. In Possession Ndlovu embraced his box-to-box role, always looking to support the player on the ball, always trying to move the ball forward with line-breaking passes. He carried the ball whenever space allowed and maintained a vertical mindset, favoring forward passes over sideways or backward options. This approach helped the team establish attacking momentum early on. However, in the final 3rd, Ndlovu’s actions leaned too heavily towards shooting. Just watched some in-possession bits from Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough, and although plenty of great accounts on here have already broken down how they set up with the ball, I thought I’d also share a few thoughts of my own. There’s been a lot of talk about their structure and the methodical, sometimes slow, nature of their build-up, and I largely agree with that. It isn’t rigid; players aren’t locked into zones at all times, but there is a clear recurring picture. The left back holding width, the right back tucking inside, the 3-2 base in build up. That structure is very evident, but I'm not going to talk about that. What really caught my eye was the intention to change rhythms across all three thirds. The slow circulation mentioned can very quickly turn into sharp vertical play or quick combinations, often without warning. The centre backs, along with one of the central midfielders, seem key to this in deeper areas. They are often the ones responsible for accelerating the game during a passing sequence, whether through sudden carries, changes of direction, switches of play, or simply finding a brave pass through the press. In the middle third, the use of a staggered midfield and central overloads allows players to operate on diagonal angles to find and link passes, and when you add the constant movement from the wingers and the attacking midfielder, it regularly sets the stage for UBTs or third man combos\runs, creates the conditions for these tempo shifts. In the final third, similar principles apply, especially in wide areas where triangles are formed to facilitate combinations. Wingers and fullbacks are clearly encouraged to take on their man in 1v1s, and pass and move sequences are used to increase the tempo. While a lot of this play happens out wide, targeting central zones through diagonals or cut backs is also a recurring feature. On the downside, and although I felt the players always seem to be on the lookout for opportunities to increase the tempo during these passing sequences, it sometimes feels like they wait a bit too long before executing a quick action. That hesitation is, in my opinion, what gave their build-up its “slow” reputation.

Positional Awareness: Maintained excellent spatial awareness, constantly scanning surroundings to anticipate opposition movements and adjust positioning. Passing & Distribution: He showed composure in possession; consistently found forward passing options without forcing risky balls. Created and exploited passing lanes to connect with the likes of Shabalala and Ighodaro across all areas. Combination Play: The understanding with Ox was particularly effective; they maintained optimal distances to facilitate fluid build-up and maintain team structure. It's not perfect, but they give the team improved quality together. Defensive Contribution: Showed high commitment out of possession, applied intelligent pressure, closed passing lanes, and maintained positional awareness. Even after Ox was removed, he was the pivot who used the ball to manage the game and supported the build-up. Impact on Team Play: Provided stability in midfield, controlled transitions, and allowed other players the freedom to operate with confidence. To avoid exposing technical deficiencies in our double pivot, Mshini did not push too high too often, maintaining good distance from Ox. Mshini functioned as the fulcrum of midfield control. I watched my team Scottland FC lock horns with South Africa's Kaizer Chiefs in the Toyota Cup at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, a 44,000 seater stadium that was packed to the rafters. Both sides sent out their developmental outfits in the opening 45 minutes, and it was during this spell that our defence was breached, as we found ourselves trailing by a goal. Nkanyiso Shinga[LB]✍️🏾 A fullback that is very strong in duels✅️ ■ He is a strong boy physically, very aggressive, and times his tackles well. He is effective in winning possession back, both in 1v1 situations and by making well-timed tackles. He looks heavy, but he has some good acceleration and stamina down the left. He has a high work rate. Something our current technical team will appreciate with his game. ■ He overlaps frequently. He is comfortable in combination plays or providing more width with overlapping runs. It's his crossing I think can get better, but he is still decent. There are some good curlers from that left foot. ■ He can anticipate passing well. He is efficient in closing channels or interceptions to break up opposition attacks. He is a good reader of the game and plays with so much commitment. He creates a lot of attacking opportunities on the left. He is able to get past defenders with some speed and dribbling. Data on his crossing frequency and accuracy is not showing a lot to take home, but it's still within the range of some of our best fullbacks in the league. Also, watching his application gives some confidence that he can consistently deliver quality into the box. He is a technically decent player. His good passing abilities will be valuable in the team, both short passes to maintain possession and longer passes to switch play or find teammates in attacking positions. He gives the team multiple options defensively and offensively. ■ He likes making attacking runs on the left, but he can also invert his runs to allow the winger space to attack wide or have those 1v1 situations with opposition fullbacks. ■ The team can easily use overloads on the left, something we didn't do much last season because we often lacked attacking quality from our LBs. As requested by Alex Miller yesterday, a look at our out of possession shape in the first half. 1: (10 secs) - Wednesday in a very narrow high block in a 523 out of possession. It only looked like this when the ball is central. Nowrich rotate (change positions during play) a lot and this narrow block denies central rotation. In this clip, they have had rotation in left back position as the CM has dropped into the area and left back on the last line. 2: 20 secs - When the ball went wide or started to move wide, the full back would advance up the pitch to pressure the full back and press full back to full back, whilst the CBs would come out with the Norwich forwards coming in between the lines, as this ball transitions across the pitch you see Sargent come out and Iorfa following tight. Fusire in this clip has come out to mark full back to full back and creating a makeshift back 4. 3: 47 secs - Wednesday get back into their narrow block shape 4: 56 secs - rotation from the front line form Norwich 5: 58 seconds, Palmer comes out of the back line to pick up the rotation and prevent space between lines. As the player turns to our left, Amass starts to come out to pick up full back to full back on the other side. In summary, Wednesday played their familiar 523 blocking shape out of possession but it was much more proactive in the back 5 than we usually see it, with full backs and Cbs following rotations and stepping out of the backline to prevent space between lines. There is still a long way to go but we have made positive progress towards our goals: ▪︎ They don't settle for anything less than total domination! ▪︎ They use unbearable speed in attack, a clear Nabi attacking blueprint🔥🔥 ▪︎ Once we find spaces to attack, our movement and passes are very quick. ▪︎ The decision-making on the ball is getting better, and our structure is getting better every game. ▪︎ They create a lot of chances every game! ▪︎ They fight as a team! We are very flexible tactically. There is positive energy around the team. The players are regaining their confidence! Kaizer Chiefs supporters, it's now on us to step up and support the team without forcing hate towards any player in the team. ▪︎ Look at how Nabi and his technical team show love, support, and patience with our players ▪︎ Look at how that is helping these guys never give up on us and our club. A note last night in the first half. We really did play some excellent football. Whilst i know Ugbo is, rightfully, coming under some stick of his lack of goals, he offers so much more to how we play. As does Josh Windass, who I am noticing is just about getting the recognition he deserves from the fans. The play in the first half was very different to the second half when those 2 went off. They both offer so much more insofar as overall game than the other options we have in those areas. A few clips below from key moments in the first half. Windass really did run the show in the final third and build up. He comes out of areas to allow straight passes where he is an option for first time reverse balls. He and Pol have really good chemistry down the right as Josh knows he will overlap and beat his man. The awareness from Josh with scanning that i picked out, allowing for high tempo play into space. A note on data: First half vs second half Passes 193 (87% ACC) vs 159 (78% Acc) xG 2.04 vs 0.42 Penalty area entries: 11 vs 6 From runs: 4 vs 2 Touches in the box: 16 vs 7 Long pass rate: 8.29 vs 13.29 Passes per possession: 4.11 vs 2.96 Wedensday's overall game is so much better when U Our game is so much better when Windass and Ugbo play. Apart from those 2 moments in the 1st 2 minutes, we failed to test the goalkeeper for the rest of the match. The keeper made 0 saves, and we only had 5 attempts, with just that 1 goal as the only attempt on target. Our attacking quality was lacking; we couldn’t find Silva, and we got no spark from Mayo as a 10. Even with substitutions at halftime, we couldn’t improve our offensive quality. Our attack needed reshuffling, reviving, and clearer tactical blueprint. ■ ZESCO United’s Threats ZESCO United’s primary attacking threat comes from their left-hand side, particularly with Chilangoshi at LB and Kampamba at LW.
