If the law's temporary provisions are extended, the top 5% will pocket nearly half the total benefit. Middle-Class Got Scraps Yes, some middle-class families saw minor tax reductions, but compared to the massive cuts for the rich, it’s laughable: And don’t forget, those middle-class cuts are set to expire in 2025. Unless extended, taxes for these families are about to spike. Corporate Windfall The TCJA was a corporate love letter: The corporate tax rate was slashed from 35% to 21%, a permanent cut. The 20% deduction for pass-through business income was a gift to high-income business owners, doing nothing for average Americans. Worsening Income Inequality The law actually widened the wealth gap: Billionaires and ultra-wealthy households saved billions, yes, billions, in taxes. In the first year alone, 82 billionaire households pocketed over $1 billion. It made the tax code more regressive, shifting more of the tax burden onto lower-income earners. National Debt Explosion And what did this "gift" cost? Oh, just an extra $1.5 to $2.3 trillion added to the national debt over a decade. That’s right, this tax cut blew a hole in the budget, which will likely lead to cuts in social programs or tax hikes that will hit, guess who? the middle class. The TCJA was a windfall for the rich, leaving the middle class with crumbs and long-term economic headaches. Let’s stop pretending otherwise. We are not fools, you now.
