2007 WC : Worst World Cup EVER 👎 The Pitch-Black Farce: How the 2007 World Cup Ended in Total Darkness" 🌑 The "bad light drama" at the 2007 ODI World Cup Final is considered one of the most embarrassing moments in cricket officiating history. ✋ Sri Lanka concedes 🎉 Australia starts celebrating ⚠️ Umpiring error occurs 📅 Next-day resumption ordered 🚫 Captains refuse delay 🌑 Pitch-black finish 🤦 Post-match embarrassment ⚖️ Officials' career suspension 🎯 The Setup (33rd Over) 📍 The Situation: Sri Lanka was chasing a revised target of 269 in 36 overs. By the end of the 33rd over, they were 206/7, needing 63 runs from 18 balls—a near-impossible task. 📍 The Offer: The light was fading fast. The on-field umpires, Steve Bucknor and Aleem Dar, offered the Sri Lankan batsmen "bad light." 📍 The Acceptance: Sri Lanka accepted and began walking off, effectively conceding the match. 📍 The First Celebration: Australia started celebrating their World Cup win, thinking the game was over as per the DLS (Duckworth-Lewis) result. ⏩ The Umpiring Error 📍 The Misinformation: As the players celebrated, the umpires (backed by match referee Jeff Crowe) made a massive blunder. They incorrectly told the captains that because the game was suspended for "light" and not "rain," they would have to come back the next day to finish the remaining 3 overs. 📍 The Chaos: Captains Ricky Ponting and Mahela Jayawardene were stunned. Neither wanted to return for just 18 balls when the result was already obvious. 📍 The Agreement: To avoid the reserve day, both captains agreed to finish the match immediately in near-total darkness. ⚫️ The "Darkness" Compromise 📍 The Safety Measure: For safety, Australia bowled only spinners (Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds) because fast bowling in that light was dangerous. 📍 Pitch Black Finish: The final 18 balls were played in pitch-black conditions. TV cameras struggled to track the ball, and fans in the stadium were booing the officials for the farce. 📍 The Final Result: Sri Lanka finished at 215/8. Australia officially won by 53 runs. 🚫 The Punishment 📍 The ICC Action: The ICC was so embarrassed that they suspended all five match officials—Steve Bucknor, Aleem Dar, Rudi Koertzen, Billy Bowden, and Jeff Crowe—from the 2007 T20 World Cup held later that year.
