I think the 9-5 mindset is not ideal personally.. especially in software - the amount of learning required to actually become an expert is beyond ridiculous. Just to scratch the service most of us need the 24/7 mentality.

Gee I think making yourself valuable to existing or future employers is admirable and that requires commitment and self directed continuous learning or tinkering.

Twenty six years in and the evenings I spend on code are the ones nobody is paying for, usually something with a microcontroller in it. Same hands, different contract. Wanting your evenings back is not a lack of passion, it is knowing which hours belong to you.

Not wanting to code after 5 is fine, but calling it "not a flaw" ignores that passion often blurs that line. When does a boundary become a ceiling?

The ability to write code fast is useful. The ability to sit with a problem long enough to understand it is the real superpower. Not every slow coder is struggling. Sometimes they’re just thinking before typing. It's all fine unless they make progress.
