Heather Jarrell, the Chief Medical Examiner of the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico, says that actor Gene Hackman's cause of death was heart disease, with Alzheimer’s disease being a contributing factor. Jarrell cited February 18 as his date of death, based on data from his pacemaker. She determined that Betsy Hackman, his wife, died before him on February 11th. The cause of death for Betsy Hackman is Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare infectious disease caused by rodents. It's so sad knowing that Gene Hackman was in the house alone and confused with his dead wife for a week before his death. 🥹

Officials believe Arakawa passed away from hantavirus, a disease linked to rodents. One week later, Hackman is believed to have passed away from heart disease. He also reportedly had Alzheimer’s. Hackman was found on the floor in the mudroom and his wife was found on the bathroom floor with pills scattered around the floor. Their dog was found in a crate not far from Arakawa.
