Keir Starmer had a furious bust-up with Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle after being ordered to finally answer Kemi Badenoch’s questions at PMQs. Hoyle interrupted sharply: “Prime Minister, it’s Prime Minister’s Questions. We’ve got to concentrate.” It’s the third time recently the Speaker has had to pull Starmer up for dodging and treating it like Leader of the Opposition questions. After the session a fuming Starmer stormed over, whacked his fist on Hoyle’s chair and “let rip.” Even the Speaker has had enough of the evasion.

Kemi Badenoch clearly decided that it would be difficult to call for calm around the Henry Nowak case, and then to spend Prime Minister's Questions talking about it at length. The format of the session rarely lends itself to calm, and she had rightly judged that others – including Nigel Farage – would bring the matter up themselves. Instead, the Tory leader did what Keir Starmer did when he answered his first question, which was to call for calm. And then she moved onto welfare spending, using Pat McFadden's private message to Lord Mandelson as an opportunity to revisit Labour's failure to reform benefits. But Nowak still dominated the session, and not just in the questions. “When was Jonathan Powell appointed as the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the British Indian Ocean Territory, and what security clearance did he have upon that appointment?” An answer came there none from the Prime Minister at #PMQs. Keir Starmer has been playing fast and loose with his ministerial appointments since the very start of his premiership. Serious questions need to be asked about the access Jonathan Powell had to classified information before he was in role.

As Sir Keir Starmer reportedly compiles his own resignation honours list, one old clip deserves to be played back in full. Because in June 2023 Starmer didn’t merely criticise Boris Johnson’s list. He attacked the whole grubby spectacle. He accused Rishi Sunak of being “too weak” to block Johnson’s honours, demanded to know whether he would also “buckle” to Liz Truss, and declared that honours should reward “public service, not Tory cronies”. Then, five days later, Starmer was asked directly whether he would issue a resignation honours list if he became Prime Minister. His answer was unequivocal: “No.” He said such lists were “very hard to justify” and added: “I think it’s easier to be clean about this and simply say, no, I wouldn’t do it.” Now, according to The Sunday Times, the former Prime Minister is consulting allies and drawing up precisely the sort of resignation honours list he told the country he would never produce. His office has declined to comment, and no final list has yet been submitted. That is the hypocrisy. But the deeper shame belongs to our political system. Starmer won power promising integrity and change, then abandoned pledge after pledge once the votes were safely counted. When his government finally collapsed, voters had no mechanism to recall the Prime Minister who had secured office on those promises, nor the Labour MPs elected beneath the same manifesto. Starmer has now left Parliament. The enormous Labour majority elected in 2024 remains. In 2023 he sneered at Tory leaders haggling over honours while the country struggled with the economy, NHS and asylum system. Three years later, with his own premiership finished, he appears ready to reach for the same departing Prime Minister’s privilege. Perhaps the most damning evidence against Keir Starmer has always been Keir Starmer.

The concerns surrounding Lord Mandelson were not hidden; they were well known through years of public discussion. He was dismissed twice from Government office for impropriety. He later appeared on Mr Deripaska’s yacht at a time when the European Union was deliberating on aluminium taxation; again raising serious questions of propriety. All of this leads to a simple and unavoidable question: why him? We are told the vetting was insufficient, yet it need not have been had proper diligence been undertaken. Ultimately, this comes back to the Prime Minister’s personal judgment, his decision to override the warning signs and determine, for reasons known only to himself, that this individual should represent the United Kingdom as ambassador to the United States. That is the central issue before us, and it is one that demands clear answers.
