Keith Sweat just explained why modern R&B doesn't hit the same 😭 "y'all killed it with all the cursing... R&B is foreplay" man said artists turned love songs into rap records and that's why everyone keeps sampling his classics.

All facts. Talking about being mutts. Not singing in the desert. No leather outfits. They don’t wanna be in love they wanna fuck and hang with the guys. These young Nwords wanna hang with their homeboys more than their women

A lot of R&B artists be movin like rappers but many still keep it romantic just look at JayDon

I understand exactly what he means. R&B used to be seductive, sexy, alluring, where things were implied with well written, clever lyrics with metaphors and innuendo. But some artists just choose to go for raunchy, borderline vulgar expletives in lyrics instead. Just feels lazy.

He’s right, I blame Chris Brown and Trey Songs

It also kills me that people forget songs like “what’s going on” and “that’s the way of the world” are RNB songs too. Rnb is more than just romancing and making love, it was working class black music for decades

I've been saying this for years, I don't want to hear R&B with a hundred curse words. Shit is ignorant and super unsexy. That's why ya'll chicks is getting your 'backs blown out' instead of the slightest amount of love 😆

He’s right. There’s no more innuendo and R&B artists want to be rappers.

@RoyalBoogie Keith’s got a point. The way R&B would smoothly say the nastiest things. Like “rain on me” by SWV . This was not about the water on the window pane beloved 🙈

Rnb is in a good place I wish we’d stop pushing this narrative

I say this all the time. Between the auto-tune and the cursing… R&b sounding so generic.

Exactly! Old R&B used to be storytelling and a vision of the situation that leads into the foreplay. R&B had true soul and yearning. Whereas now, like Keith said, you’re calling people out by their name and wanting to do this and that.

I interviewed R&B singers and wrote about this topic a couple of years ago:

When Soul Train went down, BET went down so did R&B, every song don’t have to have rappers in it to make it a hit record, just sang the damn song!!!

Cause rappers kept referring to R&B singers as soft. Not tough. They got tired of hearing "I ain't one of them lil R&B niggas. Don't play with me." 😂

while i don't think its the "cursing" per se, it is the a little more unimaginative direct on the nose lyrics

I’ve been saying the same thing for a long time. All the cursing in today’s R&B is so CORNY.

@JimmySmithAPE You know what…. Swear gotta point. R&B was built on LOVE not hate and confrontation. It was always poetry in motion.

R&B doesn’t even really exist anymore. I still listen to 80’s, 90’s, and early 00’s and the drop off is pathetic. The stuff on the radio doesn’t even sound soulful.

There are exceptions of course but overall, it’s not a lie. R&B lost its soul when the industry felt the need to mix it in with Hip-Hop; commercially its successful but artistically, it has ripped the soul from R&B music

R&b artist use to talk about sex in a way that if u didn’t know any better u wouldn’t know. To me the raunchy shit started getting over with the public was when jhene had the line “eating booty like groceries”

and you all can blame Drake for that because he's literally a singing ass dude that gets called a rapper so now the genre is confused

A lot of male R&B artists in particular 1)aren't great vocalists without auto tune certainly not any balladeers 2)yes the content is more crude than romantic 3)while at the same time rappers are out here trying to be melodic The lines are too blurred

The REAL reason RNB Died: Men found out women weren't the innocent creatures they were led to believe.

Plus another thing why R&B is dead. Is because Women change, women are not like the women in the past. Women now a day went to become like men.

Enough man. Keith Sweat is massively overrated and RADIO stations asking what killed R&B is so tired like they aren't responsible for not playing said dead music genre

Every genre has its rules and principles. I think it's fine that artist want to be ground breaking and experiment with new things but at the same time, when you changed the core value of what the genre is? You no longer practice that genre. And yes, hip-hop over all been death!
