Conclusion: For Europeans to stand a chance against a Russian invasion, they need to send troops to Ukraine now and learn firsthand by fighting the Russians. From AP: A group of Ukrainian drone pilots, invited to teach Western forces how to win at drone warfare, destroyed Sweden’s troops in an exercise where the Ukrainians played the role of the aggressor, a 24-year-old drone pilot told the AP. “They stopped the training three times” for troops to work out what to do better, but if it were real life they would have been dead, he said, giving his call sign Tarik in line with Ukrainian military regulations. Swedish troops have potential but need to improve their drones and tactics and commanders need a deeper understanding of drone warfare, said another pilot with the call sign Karat. He described flying small, first-person-view attack drones on the front line against Russian forces. Sometimes drone pilots are supported by reconnaissance drone teams but other times they are “working blindly.” Western forces cannot understand what it is like, he added: “You need to see this with your own eyes.”

Rep. Moulton: Although Russians losing the war, they're learning drone warfare, pioneered by Ukrainians. We're not doing that in United States, not training much with drones nor rapidly acquiring them. So Russians are now second to Ukraine in drones, but ahead of United States. That's of grave concern to me. We have not been modernizing quickly enough. We have not been making the trade-offs that we need to make in order to invest time, resources, intellectual capital, and monetary capital into this new kind of warfare. If Russia goes to war against the US or a NATO ally, they won't have as many tanks or aircraft and will be economically weakened. But their troops are more experienced in using and operating in this drone warfare environment than ours are.

Walter Russell Mead (Walter Russell Mead) shares a fascinating dispatch on how fast the war in Ukraine is changing, and what it means for the US military: "The first time I went to Ukraine after the war, I went to this drone factory, and it really was remarkable because in real time they were starting to get results from the battlefield, and then they were adapting. But at that time it was very simplistic stuff. They were getting kids' toy trucks and re-engineering them into drones, ground drones that could put a landmine on a tank. I was back there a couple of months ago, and the advances are just unbelievable. The intensity is the same, but the scope of change is amazing. I talked to people who said that they don't treat bullet wounds anymore because it's all drones. The Ukraine war is no longer a battalion over here shooting at a battalion over there. With these drones, you have this gray zone, where at most you'd have a couple of soldiers together. One of the hardest problems in warfare now is, how do you evacuate someone who's wounded? They're having to build a new kind of ground drone that can go retrieve a person, cover them with a metal shield, and wheel them out. Even to do this, you need a whole team of drones working with this thing because they're looking for other drones that would try to attack this. They tell me they had one soldier that it took 63 days to get evacuated after a wound. This is so unlike what war was even six years ago. If the tank and the rifle are becoming as obsolete as the cavalry charge and the sword, what kind of forces do you need? We're actually the most vulnerable to technological change, because we've got so many tanks. If the tank becomes useless, that's more of a problem for us than it is for somebody who's figured out the tank killer."

The reason they have turned off the internet and all access to information for ordinary Russians is because otherwise they would also see what is going on. And that is of course posing some very serious questions for Putin and his regime.
