In June 1976, two heavyweights stepped into the ring for their highly anticipated rematch and the NABF Heavyweight Title: Joe Frazier vs. George Foreman! Unlike in their first fight, Frazier adopted a more defensive approach. However, Foreman asserted his dominance, sending Frazier to the canvas twice in Round 5. Trainer Eddie Futch jumped onto the ring apron to stop the fight, securing a TKO victory for Big George!

George Foreman vs. Jimmy Young is one of the great reminders that boxing isn’t simply about who hits harder, it’s about who controls the fight mentally. Foreman entered this bout still carrying the aura of the terrifying puncher who had destroyed Joe Frazier and Kenny Norton. But Jimmy Young had no interest in standing in front of that version of Foreman. He disrupted George’s rhythm with movement, distance, timing, and clever counterpunching, forcing the former champion to work for every clean opportunity. The underrated part is how much of this fight was psychological. Young made Foreman increasingly uncomfortable, and Foreman’s greatest weapon, his ability to impose physical pressure, became harder to use when he couldn’t consistently trap his opponent. In the ninth round, Young dropped Foreman, and although George got back to his feet, something about the defeat felt bigger than the knockdown itself. Foreman had been beaten by a fighter who refused to fight his fight. Years later, Foreman would undergo one of boxing’s most remarkable transformations, returning as a calmer, smarter, more patient champion. Jimmy Young didn’t just beat the old Foreman that night, He helped expose the version of Foreman that needed to disappear before the second one could be born.

50 years ago today, entering the ring as a 4-1 underdog, Muhammad Ali shocks the world by knocking out an undefeated George Foreman in the African night to regain the heavyweight championship stripped from him seven years prior. His greatest moment imo.

RIP George Forman. As a kid I asked my dad why it was such a big deal that Ali beat that nice man from the commercials. He told me “They thought Foreman was gonna kill him. They were scared for his life. Then he showed me the Foreman Joe Frazier fight for context lol. OH MY GOD.
