It's less TFL and more the police. Station staff can't reasonably be expected to put themselves in harm's way by stopping fare dodgers, that's the transport police's job. The way to curb this is to increase their presence at stations with high gate pushing rates

I counted 13 bumpers in the 10-ish minutes I stood waiting for someone at Canning Town station last night. No trace of fear or paranoia in any of them. Maybe they were the 'alexithymic ones'

There's one I've seen in person where they tap in but immediately tap again on the other side which cancels or reduces the fare
