APPLEBAUM: Where we're now is hard to parse because Trump says contradictory things. Seems he’s frustrated with Putin, that he mistakenly believed he's so charming he'd persuade Putin to end the war. Trump is warmer about Zelensky, but not warm enough to actually do much that makes a difference. Trump now grudgingly sees Zelensky as not a loser. And he likes to be on the side of whoever wins. There’s grudging recognition that Zelenskyy represents very talented country, which has new assets. Trump’s sons now have big investments in drone companies. I don’t know whether that’s a factor. But nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped Trump from saying contradictory things. He says he will help Ukrainians have access to anti-ballistic technology one day, and the next day says he won’t. There’s still US-Ukrainian intelligence cooperation, and Ukrainians think it’s important. But the U.S. is otherwise not helping Ukraine much anymore. You have this situation of general confusion. Which still works to Putin’s advantage because Putin still thinks he can outlast Ukrainians. He still thinks he can break up Europe, get pro-Russian political parties elected in Europe, and still win that way. Trump has still never said anything clear like "I’m going to help Ukraine.
