My favorite one is NASA discovers a "Texas-sized" asteroid only 18 days before impact. An object that large would have been tracked by amateur and professional astronomers months or years in advance.

I think it would be harder to teach astronauts how to drill for oil than teach oil rig workers to ride in a space shuttle and operate a space suit and space drill. All the hardest space stuff was being handled by astronauts.
