Why not use shellac instead?

That filler will sink into the wood, and you'll be left with a crater like mark on the surface. The correct way to do it is to leave the filler standing proud, then once dry, sand it flat.

So the moral of the story is not to use lumber with knots.

Not a bad solution I might just cut out a section and replace it with a piece of wood without knots in it though
