I’d say there’s a difference between being generally ranked up there and someone having said so. You could find a clip of Larry Bird saying in 2011(summer after losing to the mavs) LeBron was as good as anyone to ever play the game. I don’t think that means he was generally in the goat debate as of July 2011. I’ve heard Oscar Robertson called the goat. Shaq was listed as the best ever by some in that first 3peat. He had the number one spot in a book that got some coverage at the time. He’s on a long list of people who had advocates putting him up there but he’s never really had that spot to the general public and that only goes one way. Everyone falls spots at time passes and the average fan remembers them less. When they run that poll at Lebrons retirement him and Jordan will definitely be 1-2 with Jordan probably 1.
