“Cat, cry, have sorry, Koko love.” That is what a gorilla signed when asked what happened to her kitten. In 1984, Koko, a western lowland gorilla who had learned over 1,000 signs, asked for a cat for Christmas. Her caretakers gave her a toy. She rejected it and signed that she was sad. On her birthday, they brought a litter of real kittens. She chose a grey and white one and named her All Ball. She cradled, petted, and tried to nurse the kitten like a baby. Months later, All Ball was hit by a car. Koko began whimpering, a sound gorillas make when grieving. Decades later, pictures of kittens that looked like All Ball still made her sign “sad, cry.”
