Because if you look back through Russian history, defeat in war could certainly be disastrous for tsar. And in fact, if you look at World War I, the war that Putin never talks about, it was implosion of tsarist regime that forced Russia to pull out of the conflict. All of this is to say that Putin is probably wondering, along with others around him, whether there is some possibility of securing a strategic pause at this point. Pause that might allow him to regain a better grip on the situation. But that is also very dangerous. So, I don’t think we’re at that point yet, but it's absolutely correct to lay out the facts, that something could happen very suddenly. And if you look back at the Soviet Union, there were all kinds of predictions about its demise, and then it happened in ways that almost no one had really anticipated.

It's becoming very obvious, hence Russia is using this rhetoric. Moscow was surprised by President Trump's change of position on ending the war in Ukraine, Lavrov said. According to him, the US president has returned to positions that seemed "to have been long since exhausted, and which only reflect the hectic desire of Europeans and the Zelenskyy regime to get a pause in order to rearm the Kyiv structure."

CNN contributor and former military lawyer Margaret Donovan says both Pete Hegseth and Admiral Bradley are complicit in war crimes after double strike on Venezuelan drug boats. “This is so basic to everybody who has served in the military and who has trained on the law of war and the law of armed conflict that it is a war crime, that it's no surprise that the administration will be trying to shift the blame…If the facts really have played out the way that it is being reported, he absolutely had a duty not to follow an unlawful order if it was Secretary Hegseth's order.” It’s as if they want Pete Hegseth to be guilty.
