hip-hop was positive until record labels realized there was more money in promoting gangs, drugs, and violence. Not only did white audiences love it, but it also led to the destruction of Black unity while making America richer—more prisons, more low cost workers, more control.

I remember this era, BET played conscious artists music videos HEAVY. The reality is when my generation became teenagers, we wanted that thug/hoes/dope/street music. It wasn’t just the record labels, the fans craved that BS!
