Last night, every single Chief Constable in the country wrote to the Prime Minister raising their concerns. They say that Labour's plans will put public safety at risk, as well as disrespecting victims and undermining confidence in the criminal justice system. Now, I've been an MP for 11 years. I've been Police Minister for two of those years. I have never seen every single Chief Constable in the country write to the Prime Minister directly in this way, telling the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, that his policies are putting public safety at risk. And when you've got every single Chief Constable in the country writing to the Prime Minister saying that, he should pay attention and listen to what they're saying. We're prepared to support emergency legislation in Parliament because the betrayal of victims—and I use that strong word, betrayal, advisedly—the betrayal of victims by this Labour government and by Andy Burnham is completely unacceptable.
