Today I fell into a fascinating discovery: the Apsara Dance, Cambodia’s most sacred and iconic art form. And here’s where it gets really interesting. Its origins go all the way back to the 7th century, when apsaras were carved into temple bas‑reliefs. For centuries, the dance was a royal court ritual, performed only for kings as a spiritual offering. During the Khmer Rouge era, the tradition almost disappeared. 90% of classical dancers were killed, but the few who survived rebuilt everything from memory in the 1980s. Their work saved a piece of Cambodia’s soul, and today the Apsara Dance is officially recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The dance is part of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, performed by women whose slow, fluid gestures tell stories from classical myths and religious epics. And those movements? Extremely slow, insanely precise, with fingers bent backward into shapes that feel unreal. Seriously, zoom in! I think they have double joints because mine definitely don’t bend like that :) The dancers represent apsaras, celestial nymphs from Hindu and Buddhist mythology, the same figures carved by the thousands on the walls of Angkor Wat. The Indian Hindu guy, Vishal, says to his mom that he is even ready to change his religion for his Pakistani Muslim love, Sara. Written by Pakistani female writer Umera Ahmed and directed by Haseeb Hassan, it is entirely shot in Pakistan. They try to convey that the majority of Pakistanis are up for love, not war, and want peace. This series is currently banned in India after the Pahalgam attack, and it also received boycott calls in Pakistan. But ironically, it's popular among Pakistani women, who say they connect with it. The popularity of this drama shows that Pakistani girls love Indian Hindu men. However, their country is full of warmongers and terrorists. It is deeply disheartening to see that Bharatanatyam, which is regarded as the mother of Indian classical dance and has survived for over 2,000 years, is being presented in such a satirical/mocking manner. Ananya Panday cannot even strike a proper posture, let alone master the mudras (hand gestures), bhangas (body positions), and navarasas (facial expressions). On a personal note, it took me five and a half years to learn Odissi from the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre, and yet I still do not consider myself competent enough to perform on a grand stage. And these actresses think that practicing for a mere hour will make them master a tough classical dance form like Bharatanatyam. Shame on you, Ananya Panday.
