Kuleba: Germany and France did not trick us. Russia tricked them. Lavrov may not even have known what Putin planned when he insisted in 2021 and early 2022 that there would be no war. It was a deep Russian operation to suppress any resistance before the invasion. 1/

Putin’s usual approach was a quick fait accompli without provoking a more major conflict, so pushing for a line along Dnieper-Azov Uplands-Donbas-Donets lined up with that well. Going all in for a protracted and broadly-defined campaign *was* unusual for Putin.
