My journey to New York City to witness KDLex first ever Billboard in the city that never sleeps - New York City. I am so lucky to have a family that is so supported with my fangirling. Thank you so much @kdlexINTLswthrt family. Love na love ko kayo. This experience is one for the books for me. Our 2-day billboard was booked only for a day because our Pinas team booked it accidentally on the same day as the US and Australia team. Something I feel enormously fortunate to have covered directly was Kyle Busch's 100th career O'Reilly Series win at Nashville in 2021. There's also a story from the press conference I'd like to share. Nashville 2021 was the first "normal" race weekend after peak COVID, which meant the garage was open and media availabilities would take place in the media center instead of remotely over Zoom (including from the press box). It was my first race working as a reporter in the media center, and I was still getting my bearings as far as in-person press conferences and talking off the cuff as opposed to doing things over Zoom. Daniel McFadin asked Kyle about which of his 100 wins were his favorites, a question which I had also wanted to ask. Kyle started talking about them and also about some of the ones he missed out on - Namely his debut at Charlotte in '03, which gave him a chance to take a tongue-in-cheek dig at all the criticism he got for racing in the series as much as he did. "That would've been cool. Damn Kenseth. Those Cup guys, they shouldn't run Xfinity. I don't know why they do." Kyle then got asked about the origins of the bow and recalled it starting with a win at Charlotte, but he couldn't remember the year - at which point I interjected "4!", which got him rolling again but maybe was a bit bold of me to do as someone who was still very new. It was my turn to ask a question next so I asked him about some of the sponsorship partners from all of his wins in the series and if he had heard from any of them. Afterwards, Kyle walked by my workspace while I still had the Racing Reference page for Charlotte 2004 up, so I mentioned it to Kyle again and quickly summarized with something along the lines of this: "It says you beat McMurray, Harvick, and Stewart that day. I don’t know how I used to live in the city. I don’t miss all the noise, the blazing sirens, the horns, the cars, the people. Now I walk around my backyard and hear birds chirping, the sun grazing my face, and the utter silence broken only by a cricket as the heat rises from the day. They booed like crazy and I’m trying to have that moment, but I couldn’t get that distraction out of my head. It’s like, ‘Are they booing?’ I was like, ‘Oh, no, they really wanted me. I got it. That took me a second.’ In that moment, there’s just so many thoughts going on. But getting that call from Larry Riley, the GM at the time, Don Nelson, who was the coach at the time. Getting that call and being like, ‘Hey, we’re looking forward to having you. I’m excited.’ And then me quickly looking at my phone trying to figure out exactly where Golden State was. When I mentioned Curtis Sliwa, the reactions were all the same: people lit up. They told me they support him because he understands this city in ways most politicians never could. Many said after the debate, they saw a different side of him — someone who truly knows the streets of New York and what they’ve become. I also spent some time with Curtis yesterday at the Halloween Parade, and one thing really stood out — he stopped for everyone. And I don’t mean just a few blocks. Curtis walked the entire parade route, shaking hands, taking photos, and talking to anyone who wanted a moment with him. Now, at his age, this is most likely his last run for New York City Mayor, and you can see he’s giving it everything he’s got. Whether he’s walking a parade route, visiting neighborhoods most politicians avoid, or talking directly to everyday New Yorkers, Curtis is still doing what he’s always done — showing up. After so many years putting his life and energy into protecting New Yorkers, the city owes him respect, and voters owe him a fair shot at leading this city the way he’s been fighting to protect it for decades.
