If he was reaching to his right and behind him to find his phone in the back of the car, his whole body probably rose out of the seat a bit and his legs nudged the steering wheel to the left. That would turn off autopilot and steer him into the other lane simultaneously.

Tesla driver, use autopilot daily. Per KS statements, Occam's Razor starting point: reaching for phone with right hand, left hand on the wheel to brace/balance, and bodyweight pulls left hand down on wheel. Slight force releases steering from self-drive. Car goes left.

Im assuming when he moved his body to the back seat he dis-engaged the FSD by touching the steering wheel or FSD dis-enaged when he took his eyes off the road. 100% driver error

On the old system when you turn the steering, it shuts off. I’ve heard that Shanahan has purposely not gotten rid of his Tesla because he preferred the old system.

Do ALL you people in the comments own a Tesla and have FSD? Bc I do and can assure you it is still very capable of getting into and causing an accident. I’ve been in many situations where the FSD doesn’t work as it is supposed to.
