We do not have a... big enough military to deter or defeat our major enemies, and the Armed Forces do not have enough money to pay for a bigger one. Reserve soldiers cost a fifth as much as a regular soldier. Countries that live with real threats on their borders – like Israel, Ukraine and Finland – rely on large reserve forces, many times the size of their regular armies, at a fraction of the cost.
