Labour still does not understand that Britain is dangerously under-defended. Labour talks tough on security but will not back our Armed Forces with the resources they need. Today in the House of Commons, we are debating the Armed Forces Bill. The issue is simple. We do not have a... big enough military to deter or defeat our major enemies, and the Armed Forces do not have enough money to pay for a bigger one. Reserve soldiers cost a fifth as much as a regular soldier. Countries that live with real threats on their borders – like Israel, Ukraine and Finland – rely on large reserve forces, many times the size of their regular armies, at a fraction of the cost. Britain should do the same, with reserves in the hundreds of thousands, not the tens of thousands.show more
