Labour's low vote share is "a big problem" "36%... it's barely more than a third of people voting for you" Rory Stewart 36% of the vote -> 63% of the seats -> 100% of the power. Fair?

I wonder if PR encourages a higher turnout? (People realising they aren’t wasting a vote) Are there stats on this?

@RoryStewartUK The Tories didn't rush to introduce PR when they had a majority of 80. The electoral system will never change if it's in the hands of the party that benefited from the current system.

@RoryStewartUK Of course not. Since when has anything in Britain been fair? The entire system is designed to keep the power with the rich ‘elite’ opposed to the interests of ordinary people.

@RoryStewartUK Barely more than a third of the people that voted. Not third of population. In fact only 20% of population voted for Labour!

@RoryStewartUK FPTP: 36% of the vote -> 63% of the seats -> 100% of the power over the English but not the Scottish. PR: 51% of the votes and seats -> 100% of the power over the English but not the Scottish. Regional devolution: 100% of the power is not possible.

@RoryStewartUK The first past the post electoral system is geared towards a two-party system and strong regional parties. Does not fare well in a multi-party situation. People see no reason to vote if their candidate has no chance of winning seat.

@RoryStewartUK It's amusing to hear the Right (not that Rory Stewart is anything like the current Hard Right) discover what the Left have been complaining about for years.

@RoryStewartUK One of the few times it worked for them Lib Dems are up 5x the seats on same share of the vote at surface glance.

@RoryStewartUK What about tactical voting? There were large numbers purely voting for the best placed person to kick the Tories out.

@RoryStewartUK They never complained when the tories won on around 30% of the vote. Hypocrites the lot of them. They could have changed the voting system in the last 14 years, but instead chose to fiddle the boudaries in their favour, but it back fired. We need PR and have for decades.

@georgegalloway @RoryStewartUK If it turns out like that, the system is bonkers and broken

@RoryStewartUK But I’ve heard you talking about the potential for this to be the ‘tactical voting’ election for weeks.

@RoryStewartUK regarding the text of this post, I think that the message is absorbed quicker if they use the words 'They only got a third of the vote and that gave them two-thirds of the seats'. I think people read words quicker than they read percentage numbers - 36%, 63%.

@RoryStewartUK Not only unfair but hugely contemptuous. FPTP is totally undemocratic and it continues to be imposed on us because we are expected to know our place as "subjects".

@RoryStewartUK Yes ... look at previous elections. Similar results. Tough on the tories who have been caught out even after changing the boundaries to their advantage. Is that fair?
