SD Mines accepted an invite to play Division 1 Drake on Thursday night (8/27/26) to kick off the season, and not only did they leave Des Moines with a nice payday, but also left with a 38-35 victory. Despite falling behind 10-0 in the 1st Quarter, the Hardrockers responded with a heavy dose of Dawson Dunbar, who scored the next two touchdowns on a 58 yard screen pass and a 49 yard run down the Bulldogs’ throats to take a 17-13 lead into halftime. In the 3rd Quarter, Gage Baker found former high school teammate Joshua Morales and tight end Blake Borchers for touchdown passes of 44 yards and 36 yards respectively. When momentum turned in Drake’s favor in the 4th quarter, the Hardrockers displayed the grit and perseverance we have all come to expect from a Coach Flohr team. With 7:45 remaining in the game, the Hardrockers went on a 15 play 79 yard drive that ate up 5:55 off the clock and ended with Dawson Dunbar refusing to go down until he ran it in from 3 yards out for the go ahead touchdown. While Drake had the ball with 1:50 remaining, SD Mines put the nail in the coffin with a huge interception by Senior Linebacker Charlie Johnson. In a decade when people rented movies on VHS tapes, David “The Deuce” Palmer ended his spectacular freshman season 34 years ago today with two touchdowns as No. 8-ranked Alabama Football beat the No. 15-ranked Colorado Buffaloes, 30-25, in the Blockbuster Bowl on Dec. 28, 1991. Palmer entertained the Miami crowd with moves that seemed more fitted for a South Beach night club as he started things with a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter. He provided a bookend to his offensive performance with an outstretched 5-yard touchdown reception from Jay Barker in the fourth quarter and earned the “Brian Piccolo Award” as the most valuable player. Colorado had won the national championship the previous season, but Alabama held the Buffaloes to minus-11 yards rushing on 30 attempts. Besides the pass to Palmer, Barker also threw touchdowns to Siran Stacy (13 yards) and Kevin Lee (12 yards). Matt Wethington also kicked a 25-yard field goal for the Crimson Tide. A number of you have asked about the call at the end of the 1st Half of the Bethel Football game at NCC Football in which there was a potential fumble/TD wiped off the board for Bethel that eventually led to no score by the Royals. The full play and a breakdown of issues with the call are in the video below. To be clear, though: 1) It appears that the receiver did not possess the ball at or past the NCC 8, which was needed for the 1st Down (the officials gave the ball to Bethel at the 8 after the overturn, awarding a 1st down). 2) It seems like the wing official was marking forward progress but may not have blown his whistle. It is unclear how he affected the overturn decision in the first place. What is clear is that the officials on the field awarded a fumble and TD, meaning they did not rule forward progress had been stopped. As a result, this aspect of the play is NOT reviewable by rule, as it is a judgment call in real time. 3) No TD should have been awarded before the review in the first place, as the ball clearly was fumbled to the lineman, and fumbles on 4th down in college football can only be advanced by the fumbling player. The ball would have been marked at the spot of the fumble in that case. 4) The officials missed a clear Roughing the Passer call, as the NCC defender went for the Bethel QB's legs while he was in his passing stance. This would have been a half-the-distance and automatic-first-down foul. If this play was called correctly in the first place, it should have been called dead with forward progress stopped at the 8 1/2 yard line and the Roughing foul pushing the ball to the 4 1/4 yard line, 1st & Goal Bethel, with the clock stopped due to penalty. No matter what, though, the Roughing penalty would have ensured Bethel had the ball closer to the goal with 16 seconds left (when forward progress stoppage should have been called). I've been critical of Jon Bon Jovi since that podcast last week with the whole "I was tired" comment BUT This just popped up on my feed and I can only praise him during this period in 2011. I have trained people who are recovering from this same injury and it's a hard injury to come back from in everyday life. I'm not saying all, but a lot of artists would have stopped and either cancelled some shows or really held back. Jon did another 11 songs that night and finished a tour that gave us some amazing memories. 15 years ago. Crazy!

Eagles vs Patriots Day 2 Win/Loss Verdict: The Eagles bounce back and WIN Day 2 This was a win that came from the attitude they showed up to practice with. Coming off of a loss on Day 1 they clearly were ready to play better on Day 2. The defense huddled up before they took the field and then went out and made some huge plays to win the day The first big play was by Tariq Woolen, who was the MVP of the day. Woolen picked off Drake Maye in the front corner of the end zone on a pass intended for AJ Brown. Woolen then high-stepped his way down the field for a pick-six Woolen then made probably the play of the day in the biggest drill. With everyone watching the Maye completed a pass to AJ but Woolen ripped it out of his hands, popping it up into the sky before Jaylx Hunt dove to intercept it, ending the Patriots drive After that it was the offense’s turn Hurts and the first-team offense couldn’t get anything going on Day 1 in the biggest drill of the day but they put together an awesome drive to score a TD on Day 2 First Hurts hit Dallas Goedert for a short gain over the middle. Then he hit Wicks to get the Eagles to the 5-yard line on a crossing route. Then, after a near TD to Hollywood Brown, Hurts found Brown on the next play in the back of the end zone for the TD, cementing the win for the Eagles Both teams had to their moments on Day 2 but the Eagles winning the end of the day is why they walked away with the win

The defense huddled up before they took the field and then went out and made some huge plays to win the day The first big play was by Tariq Woolen, who was the MVP of the day. Woolen picked off Drake Maye in the front corner of the end zone on a pass intended for AJ Brown. Woolen then high-stepped his way down the field for a pick-six Woolen then made probably the play of the day in the biggest drill. With everyone watching the Maye completed a pass to AJ but Woolen ripped it out of his hands, popping it up into the sky before Jaylx Hunt dove to intercept it, ending the Patriots drive After that it was the offense’s turn Hurts and the first-team offense couldn’t get anything going on Day 1 in the biggest drill of the day but they put together an awesome drive to score a TD on Day 2 First Hurts hit Dallas Goedert for a short gain over the middle. Then he hit Wicks to get the Eagles to the 5-yard line on a crossing route. Then, after a near TD to Hollywood Brown, Hurts found Brown on the next play in the back of the end zone for the TD, cementing the win for the Eagles Both teams had to their moments on Day 2 but the Eagles winning the end of the day is why they walked away with the win

I’m not going to make excuses for him Josh Allen needed to be better. His missed throws. The fumble, and the first pick. If you want to solely blame him, I get it. I personally don’t as much as maybe you do But let’s not forget what this mans body went through just LAST WEEK - hand injury to his throwing hand - knee hyper extension - was evaluated twice for a concussion - not to mention the right foot injury that he’s been dealing with for weeks. And despite all the missed plays. And fumble. And pick. The injuries. He still has us there. One play away. A catch on a near perfectly thrown ball that was taken away by referees who can’t do their job That man is a fucking warrior. Plain and simple. I get that everyone deals with injuries this late in the season. But he did not have luck on his side in that department. But like a real leader does he played through it. Also, maybe if the GM surrounded him with talent at WR, it makes your injury ridden QB a little less reliant on putting a Superman cape on every week to win games with guys at WR WHO WERE SITTING ON A COUCH ALL YEAR LONG. This is on Beane most of all.
