Question for you and possibly any other car guy: have you guys started looking at the firearm suppressor tech industry to see what sort of flow geometry, metal construction, and thermal capacity for applying the concepts to car parts? Like, 3D printed flowthough inconel muffler?

So with the cars, the mufflers are generally taken off, but the focus is more with flow through than sound mitigation (however the sound is more important for manufactures) the main use case come down to the headers generally. So yeah!

3D printing isn’t used but the models are generally just in CAD and cut/ welded.

I think there is potential to make engine components out of a 3D printed super alloy though like Inconel 718 or Haynes 218. The increased thermal capacity means you could use less material and safely achieve higher compression rates without risking critical failure.

Oh yeah ofc, but as of now most 3D printing is used for interior components or brackets for parts in the engine bay. Nothing too fancy yet, but I’m sure once more people find out about it that it’ll start to get more common

It’d require a significant investment to acquire the right machinery too. Because from what I’ve seen, they use granulated metals and high power lasers to form the structures.

That’s how they do 3D printed suppressors now. And they’re able to run software programs to simulate fluid dynamics to create an internal design to produce an effect the manufacturer is wanting. It’s really interesting stuff to research if you decide to study it.

It’s funny, as far as automotive hobbies it’s the cheapest to get into. Tbh all you need is an rwd car and to go to your local track. Even if you’ve never driven before, all you gotta do is ask around and people generally welcome you with open arms and are happy to help
