All but one of my dogs were supposed to be “only” dog. I’d probably not be entirely truthful if I was going to save him & proceed with caution- similar size, etc

You might check out the website for Casey to the Rescue, an animal transport service that runs to and from New York State points and Lexington Kentucky. Along that route are numerous shelters that I believe are not kill Shelters. If you could get that dog or any dog in danger out of there and taken to safety at one of those drop off points, it might be a solution.
